no exist ground line & tie in to assembly

New to Civil 3D 2006. I've created a surface using a DEM file.
I've created a profile view with an existing ground line profile
and a proposed grade profile for an imaginary ditch with a certain slope. The ditch has a depth that varies from about 10 to 16 feet. I've created assembly with subassemblies that give me a desired section (includes) benching. I've created a corridor that uses this assembly. The final (top) subassembly on each side of the ditch (symmetrical about center) has been set to daylight to the exist ground surface in the corridor properties dialogue box (I suppose this can be accomplished by using different combinations of subassemblies). My problem is that when I place the sections most of the assembly plots in every section with the exception of the final (top) subassembly. I don't get the existing ground line either.
I performed the sampling of sections with sufficient swath distance too. What am I overlooking. The ditch section consists of an almost flat slope at bottom, then a 3:1 slope, then an almost flat bench, and finally a 3:1 slope that daylights onto the exist ground on either side. (By the way what is the easiest way to create such an assembly with all the different options available?) Can somebody lend a helping hand with this?

I ran into a similar issue today with C3D 2008. EG won't show on my
section views when I use a DEM file as a surface. I talked with QA,
who verified that it doesn't work. So, I guess it's a known issue....

I've found that if the surface I'm daylighting to has everything turned off
in the style, the existing ground line won't should in the sections. Change
the style of the surface to at least show the border and see if that helps.

Doesn't help with DEM surfaces.
