importing shapefiles

I've been trying to figure out how to import a shapefile into a drawing.

Is there a certain aspect of it that is giving you trouble?

Shape file import specifics rely fairly heavily on what is in the shape file
and what you want out of them.

Are you talking about an AutoDesk shape file or and "ESRI" format shape
file?
Don't get the two confused.

I'm also having trouble with shape files (ESRI), If I use C3d 2007 they import without trouble, if I try with 2008 it crashes with a FATAL ERROR.

Are you using the new MAP tools FDO connection, or do you have some other
tool you are using?

I've been using the drop down map menu and selecting import.
I've not heard of FDO what is it?
(Unfortunately, thanks to (probably) the paranoid levels of security built into our systems, Help is so slow to start and run that I try not to use it; it's quicker to guess.)

You should be able to make an exception for the civil.chm file or any other
help files you're using in your virus scanner. This should make the help
window appear much faster.

FDO (not sure of the acronym) allows you to connect with that SHP file
without actually importing the linework. this is Map's new way of managing
data.

You'll need the Map Task Pane open and click the Data button. Make a
connection to the SHP file and add it to your map.

Unfortunately part of the anti-virus security involves not letting users modify stuff. It's taken nearly 2 months just to get them to modify their protocols so I could get back on these forums from my workstation (yep, user forums are classed as chatrooms). The IT dept has been totally unable to solve the help file issue, but they actually don't control the e-policies. It's someone else again. mad.

I don't understand what you mean about the Map task pane. I tried Map, attach data. I tried choosing the map 3d interface and then attach data but nothing happens.
Once the shape files are attached can they inserted by using bind like other xrefs?
I need them fully imported for reasons having to do with our GIS that would take a novel to explain.

Finally tracked down FDO in the unhelpful files, but it doesn't work. It won't import the shape files, just says there was a problem connecting to the file.
C3d 2007 imports shape files fine, why not 2008?

hmmm... i have imported large shape files in 2008 both the "old fashioned way" (through the map menu) and through the FDO without a problem. all kinds- pretty big, too (the enture state of PA).... i wonder what could be up.

At the moment there seem to be two main possibilities;
1: the shape files I import are created by our mini GIS. Perhaps there is something slightly non-standard about them that C3d 2007 could tolerate but 2008 cannot.
2: this is part and parcel of other problems I am experiencing with C3d (help files which take nearly 2 mins to open, arx error message when I close down), and with some other programmes, which are either due to a software conflict (IT helpdesk theory) or are caused by the very tight anti-virus e-policies (my theory). They plan to rebuild this computer when I have a few free days (ha!!) maybe that will fix it.
I would attach a shape file for someone else to try but it won't let me; says the content isn't allowed. Don't you just love computers?

I'd like to take a look at the shape files, since the behavior you're
experiencing is quite atypical. You can email them to me at first
name dot last name at the domain below - if they're too large for email
(larger than 10 megs or so) let me know and I'll give you FTP information.

Joan - no go. Can't import, can't connect using FDO. Crashes an
import, FDO says it can't import. I can send this to our Geospatial
guru for further investigation, if you'd like.

Thanks Jason.
I've just checked and can confirm that C3d 2007 will import that shp file without problem. (there is one corrupted polygon in it which has a node shooting off to 0,0 while the rest are ok.)
If it's of any help the programme which converted the drawing into shape files is called G-SYS GDMS(v 5.2.346).
It's a mini GIS designed and written by a British archaeologist for use in archaeology, so not exactly industry standard!
