import .fbk file help

Hi,

i'm trying to learn how to import a field book file (.fbk)...i keep running into roadblocks. i have the .fbk file saved on my desktop. using the IMPORT SURVEY DATA - SPECIFY DATABASE option, i have no existing database shown and when i try to "create new survey database " and enter a name of a folder i get "the survey database does not exists and could not be created"

this is my first time working with .fbk files....can someone explain how to get the .fbk file into autocad?

using civil 3d 2011

thanks

cadman

Hi cadman,

Once you have your Survey database created, you would need to click Import Events and Import Survey data. Then you need to follow the wizard. That is the easiest way. Other way is to right-click on networks and choose New and name it-new Network will show up. Right-click on it and choose Import>Import fieldbook file.

My first thought is do you have read/write rights to the folder under working folder.

Although I seem to remember something in this DG about deleting the existing survey database so that C3D recreates a new one. (Dont Quote me on that one.)

If you have your default install your working folder should be C:\Civil 3D Projects. Go to that location and see if you can find survey.sdb file. This is your Survey database. If it does not exist you may not be having permissions to create it. Or simply you have soem problem with yor program.

when you say "working folder" do you mean C:\AutoCAD Civil 3D Projects? in there i see the folders i tried to create when i right-click and select "new local survey database". (i see all the folder names i tried to create).

By default it should be C:\Civil 3D Projects, but as you can tell it can be any location you want. based on your description it looks like you have it under C:\AutoCAD Civil 3D Projects. See if you can create a file in that directory, maybe a TXT file?

yes...created the text file with no problem.

one other thing i noticed when trying to name a folder, i get another window with the error: Fail to load SqlCe assembly file, please check whether SqlCe has been installed on this machine.

does this mean something is missing?

It all makese sense. The message means that SQL Compact is not installed or not installed correctly. AutoCAD Civil 3D 2011 uses this program instead of MS Access to store survey database. Older versions used Access (32-bit). So if SQL CE is not installed that may explain what the problem is. You may notice that your Survey.sdbx file in Working Folder. This file is created by SQL. Absence of this file means there is no Survey database.

To resolve this see you can repair or reinstall Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition in your Control Panel>Programs and Features.

Good luck!

sorry to post on someone elses problem but i have spent a holf hour looking on how to make my own help question fourm and could not find it.  my problem is one step after his my TPS300 format file looks ok but it will not properly import into AutoCAD and says you must occupy a point first. I do not know hwat to do or if my fbk file is even usable with AutoCAD.  Please help

You should post this question as a separate topic.  Maybe a forum admin will break it out...

Your error most likely indicates that your fbk has angle-right entries before an entry that defines the instrument occupied point.  If you can post the fbk file (or at least the first part of it, up until it hits the error you mentioned), it could help us identify the issue.

Or you might simply be importing the wrong type of file.  I'm not familiar with a "TPS300 format"...  Is it a fbk file?  Or something else?

I have been having this same problem (that is, not been able to create a survey database). I have successfully been creating sds in 2011 and earlier but have installed 2012 and can now no longer create a sd with the same error message poping up as cadman. We are running 2012 as 32 bit on Win XP with min RAM (I know, the dark ages). I was wondering if you meant "AutoCAD Civil 3D 2012 uses this program instead of MS access" etc, not 2011 as I could create sds before but not now. I'm trying to repair/reintall MS SQL without much luck at the moment!

opps, just reread cadmans first post and saw he is using 2011, ignore my previous post but it still does not solve my problem then as it worked fine before in 11 and the only thing I have changed is installing 12. Hmmm.
