elevation legend table loses colour

I am having huge problems displaying a legend table for a surface coloured by elevation.

I get a table showing the correct ranges, but the little box showing the colour isn't there.

On some occasions it has appeared, but printing makes it go away.
I can't seem to get the clour back short of creating a new surface.

Anyone else come across this, or have suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong.

Solved my own problem
The colour swatches in the legend appear to not have a designated layer, they go into whatever layer is current when you insert the legend table.

I had turned that layer off after inserting the legend.
Seems obvious now, it wasn't yesterday.
