cropped surface in 2011

I am confused about one of the new features in 2011....the cropped surface functionality

Isn’t this the same as data shortcutting a surface to someone, he opens it…then I put a boundary on it and save, he then has only the cropped surface that I put a boundary on????

And everyone else has the same cropped surface???

what is the benefit of this new feature, thanx!

It's not like a data shortcut since there is no DS interface, it's a one
time shot. It is kind of like a DS however, since the surface can be linked
to the original.

Also, and this is my guess since I have not received an thumbs up from
Autodesk yet, I believe the cropped surface contains ONLY the information
contained within the boundary unlike a regular outer boundary which contain
ALL of the information within the surface.

So the advantages would be:
1. better performance
2. a standalone surface that does not require the original file (if you
break the link).

When I get a solid answer I will follow up here.

The idea is that you can take a big surface and make it into chunks. So
let's say I wanted to take a big surface and make tiles. I could draw my
polygons, crop the surface a few times and make new ones instead of using
dataclip boundaries and remaking the surface many times.

It's just another way to skin the cat.

I ran into an issue with creating a cropped surface in 2011, and during my search - this thread was the closest I could find.

I was going to submit to support, but thought I would see if anyone has run across it first (see attached)

The issue is when using the "create a new drawing" option.

Update 1 is installed, and I did not try this before update 1.

I was able to duplicate it on a Win7 64bit box, and a WinXP 32bit box.
