connecting 2 pipe networks

I have 2 separate alignments which I made into 2 separate Pipe networks. One of the pipe networks is coming off a common manhole from the other pipe network. Is there a way to combine the networks? I have two manholes, and I tried deleting one and connecting the network with the deleted manhole to the network with the existing manhole. C3D would not allow this to happen. Is there an easy way to branch off a network to other alignments to include in the same network? Or would it be easier to create separate networks to branch off the inial network? Please help!

Actually you can do a copy and paste into a network.

Do a search in help for copying network parts Message was edited by: kcobabe

That's a dangerous solution. The internal naming of parts (under the hood,
not the ones we assign,) can get real ugly real fast using Copy and Paste. I
would really recommend recreating any parts you might need in both networks.

That is the solution under the help file. The internal naming of parts is not in anyway in danger here it keeps the naming and you can go back in through the prospector and rename manually, it's alot faster then the suggestion you are giving and as a person that has already done this on several 5mi plus sewer lines that needed several options I can insure you that when done properly it will do just fine.

Try it and you will see there is no danger here at all. Especially if you have everything setup the way you want it and it took you a long time just to get to that step.

THIS IS THE AUTODESK SOLUTION!

Hey James,

Any idea why the ability to connect pipe networks was removed in the 2007 version?

Just because it's the Autodesk solution doesn't mean they didn't miss
something. I don't just throw crap out there for giggles, kcobabe.

There were issues with individidual parts NOT getting new GUIDS when copy
and paste was used to create new objects. These are NOT the part IDs that
you're seeing, this was a low-level hexadecimal ID that was used internally.
This in turn led to some serious issues with Vault trying to create
references to the same object in two different locations, making drawings
completely inoperable.

This might have been fixed in SP3, but I can't recall, and I have no way to
test. In either case, simply recreating takes two seconds and would avoid
the issue. If cut and paste works for you, by all means go with it.

Sorry, MMcall, I don't know why they took out the ability to connect
networks. I'm pretty sure it's on a wish list somewhere....

Well what you say may be true and I'm not saying you just through stuff out for giggles, neither do I, but then again I do not use vault at the current moment. So maybe the problem still exist in the use of copy and paste in vault. I know I have not had a problem with it using shortcuts, which is the method I use.

So the answer would be if you are using vault it's not a recommended use, but it you are using data shortcuts you should be fine. Unless the issue was fixed in SP3.

Is that a better answer for you? sheesh.

Since you can bring them forward from 2006 and have different networks connected I woul imagine that it was causing them trouble and the easy solution was to take the ability out. I asked on one of the webcasts and the Autodesker seemed surprised it was taken out.

Well, just to make us both laugh, I asked, and this WAS fixed in SP3.

Cut and Paste to your heart's content.

I am also having a problem with setting the sump rim to automatically go to my existing groung elevation, which later will be moved to a proposed ground elevation. The default size for the sump does not seem to hold up either. I did a search for this earlier, but I couldn't really relate to the other peoples problems.

Set this in the rules, or you can set it indivdually through the prospector window or structure properties window. As for the Rim make sure it's set to 0.0000' under the Rim adjustment. this will make the rim insert acorrdingly with the surface elevation. If you have it set to elevation you are going to run into problems.

When you go to change it all to the proposed surface just change the surface for the structure and it should automatically update.
