command line

i have been opening drawings using "open" menu, but today, for some reason, when i click the "open" menu it doesn't work expect it ask me on the command line
"Enter name of drawing to open <.>:"

I don't want to be typing all names of the drawing i'd like to open, does any one know how to get rid of this command so i can only use "Open" menu?

Boy this seems to be a repetitive question.

That's odd, since it seems like that question is answered once every
hour here...

Hey, we could do like the Weather Channel "Local on the 8's" - every 10
minutes, we post something that says "FILEDIA=1" 😉

What is a filedia?

Hi John,

Surely that was a tongue-in-cheek comment. 🙂

It is the answer the most asked question in these newsgroups.

The question arises when ever an untrained user expects to see a dialog box
when they start a command and find that they don't.

Not being trained, they don't know to type ~ to open the dialog box, or to
stop the command, set filedia to 1 and continue with the command again, so
they post here without ever doing a search.

Here's some information from the help file:

Type: Integer
Saved in: Registry
Initial value: 1

Suppresses display of file navigation dialog boxes.

0
Does not display dialog boxes. You can still request a file dialog box
to appear by entering a tilde (~) in response to the command's prompt. The
same is true for AutoLISP and ADS functions.

1
Displays dialog boxes. However, if a script or AutoLISP/ObjectARXT
program is active, an ordinary prompt is displayed.

Don't take any of this personally, nyaromulo100. We're a little punchy with this issue. It's actually a little lauaghable at this point. This is by far the single most prolific bug / issue in all of AutoCAD / Civil 3D etc. In fact, some of us have our replies on the ready in the windows clipboard.

Search for "FILEDIA" in any of the AutoCAD based discussion groups and you'll find a mess of 'em.

Of course, not knowing this in advance it's tough for folks like you to find it sometimes.

Just jerking Jason's chain.
Should have put a wink after it.

This is also the most ignored issue by the Royal House of Autodesk.

thanks for your calming attitude. It's a bit hard to have done the research based on "FILEDIA" because i didn't know about it, but now "FILED" i know it too well! thanks again
