civil 3d memory limit

I have an computer with 8GB RAM running Windows 7 x64 and civil 3d
2010. Application often shows error warning with message attached
When I look in task manager it says that acad32.exe is using cca 1.5GB
of RAM.
Is there a solution to this so civil3d can use all available RAM?

If you cant see the message it says:

"AutoCAD is running out of system memory. Continuing the current
operation may result in program failure or loss of data. Do you want to
cancel the current operation? Yes/No"

Two things can happen after that. If i click "no" it asks the same
question 10-20 times in a row until it finishes what it was doing. Or
application crashes after the same procedue.

I have the same problem. Maybe it will get better if Civil 3D is ever 64bit native. I have 6GB of memory on XP 64 and I only see the problem when I've been opening masses of large complicated files all day long. I would suggest just restarting the computer a little more often.

Still, something seems odd. I've seen that error message, but only when I get up to around 2.8GB of memory. Seeing it at 1.5GB is strange.

I've heard that C3d can get flaky if the temp folder isn't cleaned out on a regular basis? Might try that?

If you have memory issues you need to close all other programs that are running on your computer.
Try to only use Autocad and Outlook and close every thing else.
I have never exceeded using 1.7gig of RAM with only Autocad running unless I open other applications.
Please check out this video on Youtube .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LinrbEtffck
It nicely explains the RAM limit with a 32 bit Autocad application.like Civil 3D 2010.
Hopefully Civil 3D 64 bit will fix all the RAM issues.(If they ever release it!)

Just as a note, I used to see those types of messages quite often. Since I've upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit, I haven't seen one yet.

Hi roedan69,

If you are having memory issues, why would you keep Outlook open?

Surely no program ever written uses more resources to do less.

That was the reason why i upgraded to w7 64 bit. There were many more
frustrating chrashes on 32bit xp. Now with 64bit i had few chrashes
when working with large files but i get this message from time to time
and it would be ok if it appears once but it always comes in a row.
Even if i click on yes it repeats the question many times.
So there is no tweak to make civil3d use more RAM until it becomes
64bit?

I will try that

That will have virtually no impact on a Windows 7 x64 machine with 8GB of RAM.

It could sometimes help on 32-bit XP, but it no longer helps on these newer systems.

yes, memory allocation per application is the problem

The only tweak is to make it a 64-bit application. I was hoping for a 64-bit version in 2009, then again in 2010. Let's hope we get one for 2011!

Hi Laurie,
Your right. Bad example. I picked Outlook because I need to send and answer email more then I work in CAD these days.
What I was trying to say was close any program you don't need while running Civil 3D on a 32 bit operating system.
Each application you open uses RAM and it doesn't take much to get to the that magic 3gig limit.
64 bit operating systems do allow you to use more RAM for other programs and still run Civil 3D .Thank you Windows 7
Hopefully Autodesk will release Civil 3D 64bit soon and fix all these memory issues, but then I still believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny.
Now if someone could help me out with my thread on the SID image plot crashes Civil 3D 2010 I'd be happy.

Hi Brian,

R2011 appeals to me as a likely release date for the 64 bit Civil 3D.

AFAIK R2009 still had too many issues sitting on top of some old Map
code to go 64 bit.

R2010 had to deal with a new drawing format. Remember the Map guys
can't get going till the AutoCAD is reasonably pinned own and Civil
can't get going till Map is reasonably pinned down.

The Civil 3D functionality is now much closer to a comprehensive package
and there will be less pressure for new features than previously.

With R2011 it seems there is a good chance the Civil programmers will be
able to create a 64 bit version.
