adding subassembly with datum as target surface

i am working on a pavement replacement project in which there is no new base course below the new pavement other than in areas where we are widening the roadway for turn lanes, etc. i need to show some base course in those areas, but because it is varying offset and varying width, i cannot simply do this with my normal corridor assemblies. i found a solution by creating a new subassembly with a target offset at the existing back of curb (and omitting the link) and then adding my base course subassembly from there to a target offset to two feet behind the curb. the only problem with that solution is that i don't know if i can target my datum surface. anyone every run across this issue and have a solution?
