Xref Mysterious objects

Not sure how or why this is happening so I'm turning to you guys for help. 

I loaded an xref into one of my drawings, and a bunch of extra objects showed up. Once selected, they show up as part of the xref. When I open the xref (with all layers unfrozen and on) none of the extra objects are there. Any idea how to purge them out?

I'd like to release the drawing but I can't at this time.

Is the xref an attachment or overlay? If it's an attachment, try changing the type to overlay.

It's attached as overlay.

I tried to edit xref in place but it won't allow me to edit anything.

I found a work around. When selecting edit in place, i manually selected nested items and only did a few at a time. Still annoying though.
