What is the benefit to numbering alignments?

Maybe I'm missing something.  What is the benefit to numbering alignments?

Example:  Street CL (1), etc.

When I have a street centerline alignment, I am failing to see any benefit.  If I have a change, I want the change, not any old stuff.  If I have a need to different alignments for differing purposes, I'd rather give each my own unique name.  If I make a change, and I want that change easily reflected into a profile or corridor, wouldn't it be more efficient to let the name remain constant?

Do you allow the program to do this?

When making changes, instead of "Street CL (1)" --> "Street CL (2)", and so on...

...just name it "Street CL" and allow it to overwrite.

I suppose there may be a benefit, but I am failing to experience a benefit so far.  Don't get me wrong, I am willing to continue this default if there is a benefit (or if allowing overwriting would cause a problem).

You dont have to accept the default naming template. You can go an name the alignment Maple Street etc.

You can't have two alignments with the same name so by adding a counter to the naming template, it prevents duplicate names.
