What is a .grs file?

Anybody know what .grs file are used for, they are really huge files. Thanks

I am getting the message:

The external file
F:\DWG\Quarterly\Q2-2012_1946f7.grs
associated with the surface Grid from DEM file Overall_GM could not be found

I have a DEM with that name, but not in this drawing and I haven't been able to reference it in my system.

Hi,

When you save a drawing containing a large surface, the data pertaining to the large surface is written to a separate file that is saved in the same location where the surface drawing resides. The TIN surface companion files have the .mms file extension, and the grid surface files have the .grs file extension. I believe this is where your GRS file is coming from.

Just make sure this file is placed next to the drawing file and you may be all set.

I have searched the directory for such a file and have found none.

All of the files that I am opening that inform of the missing .grs do not reference the DEM (grid), or any surface for that matter.

 Is this something within the shared Civil 3D projects? I have searched all of the Project  xml files that are sharing project surfaces and have not found a reference to the DEM or the grs. Not too sure where this is coming from...

I too have the issue. Infact, in my system - project folder both the DEM and .grs files are there.
I could not able to export to AutoCAD drawing. The same error persists.
Any Valuable solution from Autodesk Please....

we just started to have the same problem with civil 3d here in our office.   It doesn't happen with every project just one or two so far.   I haven't really been able to find any solutions but I think exporting out as an xml and then reimporting the surface and then exporting the drawing to acad might work.
