Volume question

I was asked if Civil 3D (or LDD) can generate a surface based on volume
numbers? In the past I have digitized contours, applied elevations and then
calculated the volume...this would be the reverse method.

Thanks

I suppose that's a lot like asking if you can create a line based only on the length. Sure you can but you're missing important information. If you have one surface and know the volume you need, there are (theoretically) an infinite number of surfaces that will give you that volume. How are you going to control that new surface?

A lot more information is needed before we can help you out on this one.

One thing to look into is the grading tools, it will automatically move feature lines associated with a grading group up and down to a desired volume. Perhaps that will be enough of what you need.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I will look into the grading
tools...

Specifically:
Grading > Grading Utilities > Grading Volume Tools ---> Auto-Balance Volumes.

When you first create your Grading Group surface, make sure you select 'Volume base surface' and choose the surface you want to compare it with (although this can be done later as well).
