Using Map functions in Civil 3d 2011/2012

We are currently using C3d 2011 and are making a proposal for a client to add GIS data to the completed lots.  Basically it would involve adding attributes such as Filing number, lot owner, lot number, block number, home builder, landscape company, etc.  Currenlty does the C3d 2011 Map pulldown provide all of those types of functions or do we need to purchase Map 3D to accomplish this?  Also how would our client be able to view/access this data?

thanks!

You should be able to do all this with the version of Map in C3D.

The problem is that C3D and Map are schizophrenic.  So there's no way to take your C3D Parcels, add that data to them, then generate a shapefile (or any other GIS-like task).  You may end up needing to create polygons from your lots, and then use Map to add the data to your polylines, creating a solution that actually has nothing to do with any C3D functionality.

Sinc,

Thanks for the reply.  In your opinion would you go with ArcGis (since they seem to be the standard in GIS

and for the free viewer the client could use) or Map 3d to accomplish what we need?

As Sinc said Map3D and Civil 3D don't talk 100% of the time. What you can do is export the parcels to SDF format, then in the map3d workspaces data connect to the sdf (parcel) file edit the schema to add the fields you need then start adding the data as you need. You can even connect to a database and do a join of the data to the parcels if you have a key field in each that matches.

As for the viewer you can use DWF format and the FREE dwf viewer to display the attributes of the parcels, it even allows you to search on the data and use GPS as long as you assign a coordinate system to the  dwg before exporting to DWF. A little bit more than the free E$RI viewer can do. ; )

from the users manual, you only get the name, number, area and perimeter with an output of a C3D parcel to SDF.  The SHP file format is more common than SDF which would be preferred if your client is using an ArcMAP type application, so you can bulk copy your SDF to SHP using Map/C3D tools.

If you want to add the additional data, you're looking to edit the SHP schema, for which you can set types of attributes to add.  This will be done by checking out the SHP files that you created and adjusting the values, then checking the data back in.  It's good to keep it the data connected to MAP/C3D because it will be more comfortable for operators, but store teh data as SHP for conformity in GIS data types.
