UNDO file size

Constantly getting box that says "Warning! The undo file length is xxxxx bytes. Undo will be automatically disabled at 1750000000 bytes to prevent overflow. You can clear the undo file by turning undo off and then on again via the undo command."  This is very aggravating.

Use UNDO-CONTROL-NONE, then UNDO-CONTROL-ALL, list in Taskbar UNDO empties and it works again for a short while, but then I cannot undo past this point.

This box popped up once during a command and caused Civil 3D to lock up, causing me to lose work.

Web search does not find much help.  Does anyone know a fix, how to address this, or how to increase the file length so I do not get this message?

Are you short of space on the drive the temp files are stored on? Have you tried clearing the temp folder.

I had cleared the temp folder under my user name (accessed by typing %TEMP% in the windows command line), and it did not help.  However, I just found that my temporary drawing location is set to C:\TEMP.  I just cleared all files from that folder.  Do you think this will help?

BTW, Windows 7 64-bit w/ Civil 3D 2013.

It's the Autosave path that holds the AutoCAD temp file location.as.PNG

That may be C:\Temp or elsewhere. Don't know if it will help until you try it. It's the first thing to try though.

Actually I do not believe I have gotten this error a single time since I cleared that Temp folder.  However, I have not had to work any more in the drawing that was most troublesome for me with this error.  Presuming the occurrence of this error is not somehow related to being in a certain drawing, I may have it fixed.  I will post back if it does happen again.

I am having the same error

Clearing the Temp Files will fix the problem untill the Temp file again fills up and you will see the saim error

when that happens just save your file close cad and clear the temp filder again

if i find a better solution i will post it

only happens in large files in my experiance

regards

Tom

I am getting this error on many machines in my office now (8 that I know of).  A custom temp folder is set and has been kept clean.  The undo file size is out of control though.  900+ mb and I can't see why.  The task being done are not complicated and the drawings are not huge.  Definately big drawings are worse, getting undo overflows several times a day, but many other smaller drawings have the same issue.  The undo command also doesnt seem to group commands properly even though it is set to do so in options and you have to undo many times to go back only a few steps.  Maybe this is part of the reason the undo file gets so insanely large so fast?  These are all the same types of drawing we used in civil 2011 and never had any issues with undoing or undo overflows.  Our work flows have not changed but the software is increadibly unstable in this regard.  The worst part is that the notification that your undo file is getting large often hangs the drawing, so you are forced to shut down Autocad.

Any advice beyond keeping the temp file clean?  The active temp file seems to be the issue, not all the other files in the directory.

Actually, that only specifies the location for autosave files.

There is an entry a bit further down for "temporary drawing file location" (also equals the r/o sysvar TEMPPREFIX)

Yes, all settings are correct.

I have done more testing this morning and I think I know what is causing the Undo to fail.

I have narrowed it down to Associative Hatching that will cause the Undo to all of sudden list every mouse zoom as an Undo command and as soon as I take off the associative hatching then the Undo command will work and will combine all the mouse zooms into 1 undo command.

Could someone verify this and see if you get the same results.

Start a brand new drawing by using Autodesk Civil 3D template "_AutoCAD Civil 3D (Imperial) NCS.dwt" which is located under C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Local\Autodesk\C3D 2013\enu\Template.

Save the drawing before you do anything, then just drawn a couple of lines, then using your mouse middle button to zoom in and out, then go to the Undo icon pull down and you should only see a few undo commands. Now draw a rectangle and hatch it with Ansi 31 and do not make it associative hatch yet, once done save it, then using middle mouse scoll button again zoom in and out and then go back to the undo and again you should only have a few Undo commands.

Now let's see if we can break it, now select the existing hatch and make it associative hatch, now save the drawing, now just draw a line, check undo, now use middle mouse button to zoom in and out, now go back to the Undo and in my testing you should get a whole bunch of Undo commands.

I would also be curious if you take an existing drawing that you know you are having problems with and if it by chance has hatching in it select it and see if it's associative hatch and if it is turn it off and see if that fixes that drawing.

I have doubled and tripled checked everything and with all my testing I have concluded that Associative Hatching causes the Undo command to not combine all the zoom in's and out's into 1 Undo command like it suppose to.

So now if I can get other people to test this and reply back to this post then maybe Autodesk can get to work on it to solve this problem.

Thanks

Correction, I meant to say Annotative versus Associative, so replace Annotative for the word Associative in my previous reply

Sorry about that.

I have been able to confirm on 3 different machines that the Undo command will fail if we have just 1 hatch that is set to annotative hatch and this only happens in Civil 3D 2013 SP2 and Civil 3D 2014 No service packs.

I have tested this also in Civil 3D 2012 SP3 and the Undo works fine and I couldn't break the undo by using annotative hatching at least with SP3.

I have also tested this with ADT & MEP 2013 & 2014 and the problem only exists with Civil 3D 2013 & 2014 and only if there is just 1 piece of annotative hatch within that drawing.

It doesn't matter if the HPAnnotative system variable it 0 (off), if there is 1 piece of hatch within that drawing that has annotative hatching turned on within a Civil 3D 2013 or 2014 drawing then the Undo doesn't work correctly.

I have been able to take the Civil 3D 2013 & 2014 drawings that have this problem and change every single piece of hatching and turn off the annotative hatching and the Undo will start working for that drawing jsut like it's suppose to.
