Time to switch LDT 2006 to C3D 2007?

I have been considering switching from LDT 2006 to Civil 3D 2007 or LDT
2007, but have been waiting for the bugs to be worked out. Since the
release of SP 2 a few weeks ago, have there been any problems besides the
Google Earth issues? I still hear something about the C3D hydraulics not
being entirely usable. Most of our work is roadway design.

Is there a full series of video training available similar to Landnut's DVDs
for LDT/CD? I know Gary Rosen is now working for Carlson Software and has
not put a new C3D DVD beyond his intro to 2005 on his website. I have been
following the Autodesk webinars and went to C3D Essentials class in January
2005.

If you are doing roadway and subdivision design and are not using civil 3d
then now is a good time to make the switch. I have been using it since its
release and have struggled through many of the problems. Some problems still
exist and that is where experience with the software is key.

It is alot of work to make the switch. This beast is totally different than
the land you are used to but it is worth it.

Also, check with your reseller. They may have a program to assist in implementing Civil3D into your organization.

I have been working with them on it. They provided the class I took a while
back and have webinars about C3D. I was looking for training on DVD because
of my experience with the Landnut videos. They are great, but only for
LDT/CD with a quick intro to C3D. I know C3D also has tutorials.

The bigger question though is C3D 2007 with SP2 really ready for production?
Bug free? Is it user friendly enough to use now or wait until for 2008? I
don't have any pressing projects, but that means I have time for training
and homework now. I would hate to learn under the gun. I could probably
study it to the tune of two days a week at the moment. I don't find the
webinars in depth enough to remember without practice, but I have left 2007
unopened until I switch to C3D.

On a side note, how is LDT 2007 compared to 2006? Besides the new 3D
features of basic AutoCAD and new file format, is there any reason to
upgrade LDT from 2006 to 2007? All of the bugs I read about here made me
wait for 2007 even though it arrived in April.

My understanding is that there will be no more improvements to LDT. All the effort is going into Civil3D. LDT 2007 is the same as LDT 2006, except for the core prouct changes (i.e. Map and AutoCAD).

R.K., are you saying that there is more pain than gain in moving from LDT
2006 to LDT 2007 with SP2?

In my experience, LDT is not changing and Autodesk is barely getting by to
make sure the changes to the AutoCAD core don't greatly interfere with the
LDT functionality. I think these issues are what RK is referring to... I
am using Civil 3D SP2 and LDT 2006 SP1... have not (and don't intend to)
upgrade LDT. It ain't broke, so I ain't gonna tempt fate. :-}

The rumor is that the following upgrade will be shipped with 2008. It should make everything less of a problem. Or it may be just a wishlist item. Imagine the possibilities.

Already have one - but I see no interface to the computer? Perhaps that is
in the 2008 Easy button? 🙂

I could never ever ever go back. I am doing a Land Desktop 2006 class on

have to blow the dust off the install CDs.

here's the thing

I have spent the last 18 months learning Civil 3D in every waking moment.

I spent about 6 weeks fighting parcels specifically.

I boiled those six weeks into about a day or so of lessons (depending on how
much you want to learn) and I now have clients who have darn near immediate
success.

I spent about 6 weeks fighting feature lines and grading objects
specifically.

I boiled those six weeks into about a day or so of lessons. I also spend
time listening to my clients and learn how they grade a site. A few weeks
ago, a client and I sat down and worked up a repeatable set of feature lines
customized to the way they grade a lot. This can be blocked in (along with
design labels that help them get their bearings) and quickly updated.

I spent about 8 weeks getting down a system for building complex (but
straightforward) corridors- entire subdivisions in one model, etc. I boiled
that down into a day or so of lessons. I have clients who can model a
subdivision including intersections and transistions before I leave that
day.

There is more where that came from. Pipes, Volumes, Corridors of a
different color, customizations, analysis, expressions, things to make your
design easier. We live eat breathe sleep and apply this stuff 23 hours a
day.

Anyone can read you a book.

It takes someone special to read you.

You want an easy button? We exist. Find us.

Thank you for the offer. I have seen numerous demos and webcasts of Civil
3D. I have even attended an AOTC C3D Essentials 3 day class. At that
point, January 2005, I realized that C3D was not ready for production, and
the training book forgot to include profiles! My instructor covered the
topic anyway. C3D 2007 for the last few months has been apparently buggy,
at least until SP2 according to what I was reading in this discussion group.
I don't have an immediate need for it, but I do have the time for education
and home work. Most of my AutoCAD work lately has been more with 3D solids
than civil work. AutoCAD 2007 promises to be better for 3D solids, but I
don't want to go that direction until I am sure that the bugs in 2007 are
fixed. LDT 2006 has been bulletproof for me.

How can I tell if I am "gonna love it?" For me, I love the concept of C3D,
but I don't want to switch if it is going to crash all the time or it can't
do everything that LDT can do.

how can you tell? I don't know.

But I couldn't face a road design if I knew any time a centerline grade
changed I had 25 intersections to manually fix and all kinds of stuff to
manually relabel.

If you have LDT customizations or slick tricks to get that kind of stuff
done, by all means stay there.

But I can deal with the occasional crash if it means even the most
catastrophic of road grade changes can be updated in 15-20 minutes on one of
the sites pictured in my portfolio on civil 3d.com

or if i can slam out a site plan design, fully labeled and ready to go in 4
hours (Project 1 in my portfolio)

Brad,

Realize that if you are subscription (still required for C3D I think), you
can install both programs and use the one you need. I have LDT 06, C3D 06,
and C3D 07 all installed on my machine. I am not going to bother with LDT
07. If I need AutoCAD 07 functionality without C3D, then I use the Map
icon. I still have C3D 06 because I have found I can not use 06 files that
use shortcuts in 07, still need to access those files occasionally.

I could say install it! Learn it! Even if you decide not to do any
projects on it yet! You will need to one of these days.

HTH
