This drawing was created with a newer version of Civil 3D.

I want my Civil 3D commands and objects back!!! This is ridiculous!!! Is anyone else fed up with this message? It has cost us a lot of downtime and aggravation.

"This drawing was created with a newer version of Civil 3D. All entities created by Civil 3D within the drawing are in a proxy state. Additionally, all commands, settings, and displays of Civil 3D are disabled for this drawing."

One of my unsuspecting employees made the mistake of inserting a simple block from a 2010 drawing into a Civil 3D 2008 drawing of a Grading Plan. Since my commands have been disabled in the Grading Plan, I've also notived that surfaces and pipe netowrks that are referenced into other drawings are also missing the same objects and surfaces.

I have also had instances on other projects where drawings appear to have even trasnformed themselves into 2010 drawings for no apparant reason!

How can I get my Civil 3D 2008 drawing back the way it used to be? I've tried finding a backup file to use, to no avail.

Are you saying that an employee inserted a 2010 block into a 2008 drawing
and he was using 2008? If he were using 2010 at the time, I believe what
you may have is expected.

Sounds obvious, but have you tried looking at the file in Explorer, and going right-click -> Properties -> Previous Versions tab?

It sounds like you're using some kind of doc management software. I have
never heard of a previous versions tab. And I don't have one now.

That is the "Shadow Copy" feature available on Windows server 2003. You
have to enable shadow copies on the server and install the shadow copy
client on the workstations.

It's also available in Vista Business & Ultimate editions and it was turned
on by default in my Ultimate installs.

If you don't have daily/weekly backups there really is no way to go back
with the file, there is no backward compatibility in Civil 3D. 2010 and 2008
are different DWG versions so I'm a little curious how someone inserted a
2010 block into a 2008 file.

Also the files didn't spontaneously convert to a newer version, someone
opened them in 2010 then saved the file.

Go to the directory where your autosaves are stored and look for a previous version that works. In the command line type in options-> go to the files tab->and look under the automatic save file location for the path.

You just have to watch file space - it will not provide access to older
files after a certain time frame - ie, don't expect it to catch your
prior two revisions of a drawing after 6 months of inactivity...its not
a replacement for a good backup.

I am having the same issue but I am recieving the file from an outside consultant. unfortunatly this is our survey so I am unable to create surfaces or anything else related to civil 3d. I have asked that the file be saved down to ver 2007 format (using civil 3d 2008) and I am still getting this error. Is there something that needs to be done that I might be able to relay to our subs?

The autocad file format can be saved as a previous version but the civil 3d objects will remain as 2010 or which ever version they were saved in unless they export to autocad format in which case the civil 3d objects will be exploded.

If you really have to go backwards, I think XML is the best option but it only does the raw objects, not the views etc.

You'll need to have your subs export the xml before they send the drawing across to you.

Best option is to have them work in the same version as you. Good luck on that one.

...and just to be explicit, to get drawings, your subs have to use "Export to Autocad 2007" instead of "Save as". This destroys all the Civil intelligence, but it puts the drawing in a state where you can open it without having all C3D commands shut down on you.

excelent guys thanks for your input. I have been poking around and I am getting pretty consistant results. I agree that the sub should be using the same ver as we are as well, but it is what it is 😞 . So it seems the order would be: (1) export the LandXML data, then (2) export to "autocad 2007" and at that point should be able to recreate or utilize the information.

A coworker inserted a layout tab into a Civil 3D 2008 drawing from a 2009 template file and all the settings and styles disappeared. He was running C3D 2008.

First thought, beat him with a big stick.

Second thought, maybe look at template names and training. We have different templates for the different versions with appropriate names.

E.G.

'MCC A3 title 09.dwt' for 2009
'MCC A3 title 10.dwt' for 2010 etc.

It's best to have anything you want to insert (blocks, legends etc) at
the lowest version you guys are using. Ie, all of our blocks, sheets
etc, are all back in 2007.
