The name of layers of surface elements,
I’m not sure if there is a smart way to know the name of the layer of surface elements (attached). For example, the surface may contain major contour, minor contour, boundary, etc. how one can know their layers to edit them. Is this done by trial and error?!
Also, I’m not sure how the size, color and orientation of the contour text is controlled

All done by specifying object layers and styles
Does your country allow you to access YouTube? If so, here's a video that will give you a good overview of Civil 3D styles. It's from Chad at Sterling Systems. (Thanks, Chad!)
Thank you neilyj and tcorey for the input.
The screenshots and video are very interesting and helpful.
I’m wondering now if there is a way
Is that possible?
Go to Toolspace > Settings > Surface > Label Styles > Contour.
You can put the contour labels on whatever layer you like and have them the colour of the layer or any other colour.

Thank you troma for the help. It works fine (attached)
I have a suggestion, always put the border on a NO PLOT layer. I cannot think of a reason for it to plot, turning this layer off causes problems. Perhaps I am wrong.
Have you any idea how to plug (on the layers panel): plot on/off, turn on/off, freeze/thaw (attached) when the current mode is layout so that the user can access the intended layer easily (instead of going to the layers list and do this based on the layer name! very tedious)
