Surface Spot Elevation Label

Hello,

I have a surface spot elevation rotation issue. I would like to be able to
manually rotate my labels individually. Can this be done?

I'm really trying to avoid creating bunch of different styles with different
rotation angles to avoid overlapping with other
objects.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks

They can't be rotated. Another option is to add Points instead of surface
labels
Advantages:
1. They can be rotated.
2. You can easily change the elevations to match a different surface.

Disadvantages:
1. If your surface changes, they need to be updated - easy - 2 or 3 clicks,
but if you forget....

The disadvantage is a big one; worth more than one of the advantages. I'll
leave it to you to decide.

I have found that I only need 4 different label styles for surface labels.
0, 30, 60, 90 degrees. I never need a rotation other that those. It makes
the file look better if you don't throw in odd rotations like 15, 55, 71
etc.

Another option is to just drag the label around the marker to a better, non-overlapping position. That works for us a majority of the time.

Interesting idea, the points.

I have a full set of labels at 45* around the circle. It is a bit of a pain, but with copying, it goes pretty quick.

Thanks for all the responses.

Matt,

Are you using regular survey points to do this?. How is the drawing
stability/performance if you have 100+ points?. I just don't work as much
with points. I would like to know how is it performance wise.

Sweet, Brian.

Can you use an expression with that so that we have TFC/GL spots?

Honestly, I don't think I've tried putting an expression in a piece of reference text. I would presume it would work just like any other label but you know what happens when you presume, you make a Pres out of... well... never mind.

I just tried it out and, yes, you can use expressions in reference labels.

Indeed you can use expressions. This is great. Thanks for the info Brian.
At the end of your article you mentioned "Enjoy a completely rotatable spot
elevation label!". You still have to setup a style with a different
rotation if you wanna achieve this correct?

Thanks

NO! That's the whole point of the article. You use a line label with a piece of reference text. To rotate the label, rotate the line.

Here's a quick video showing the results: http://screencast.com/t/NGE3NjYwZG

Got it. Now I wonder why you mentioned the non-plotable layer thing.

Thanks!

If you don't want to see the line, you can put the line on a layer that doesn't plot but still have it visible in your drawing for editing purposes.

Brian,

I use a block with a donut and a line called grdtck for my spot els. I set it up with labels for TC/AC and the made a bunch of copies at 45* around the circle.

Do you know if I could just label the line portion of the block, and have it work?

Thanks

You could add a block to your line label style.

You can also use a two point slope label that displays the elevation of the first picked point. This way it will be dynamic to the surface and you can rotate it as needed.

That's a fantastic idea. I'll have to add that option to my blog post. Thanks!
