Structure Label Style

I am trying to make a structure label that reflects our current company standards. I would like it to look like the sketch in the attached PDF. I am able to create both the bottom and top labels however, I cannot get the bottom label to locate itself correctly at the bottom of the structure. I have tried writing an expression to set the y-offset (assuming that the top of the structure is the attachment point) however I am unable to get it right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike, I'm new to all this myself but your style does not seem too
unusual, is there no generic pipe label that does something similar?

You have to label the structure twice. Once for the top and once for the
bottom. The trick is to tell Civil 3D where to place the label. Look at
the attached image to find out how to do this.

You'll want Default profile label placement
Select Structure label placement

Not that is included in Civil 3D

There is a way you can do this with one label. You attach the structure text (name, rim, sump) to one line (rotated 90) and let the attachment point be the top of the structure and you attach the inverts to another line (rotated 270) and use and expression for the y-offset. I just cannot get the expression right with the vertical exageration in the profiles and the units within the part itself.

That's why it's best done with 2 different labels.

Here’s a sample. Just change the 4 in the expression to match your requirements. It’s the one with today’s date.

This can be accomplished with a single label style.
The top label is easy - be sure to have your Structure Label Placement set to 'At top of structure', then simply have a vertical line that attaches to the top of the structure and have the name, rim and sump elevations attached to that line.
The data at the bottom of the structure can well be part of the same label style. For now, the best way to get it is to define an expression for the 'Start Point Y Offset', and that expression is: (-1)*({Rim to Sump Height}+{Floor Thickness})/({Drawing Scale Conversion}/10). In this example, the value '10' is for the Profile View Vertical Exaggeration. I am not crazy about hard coding this, but currently that property is not exposed to the user. The workflow for now would be to have a different style and expression defined for each commonly used vertical exaggeration. Any changes to the drawing scale would be incorporated into this expression and hence the label style, however. See the attached screen shot.

I hope this helps.

Scott,

I get a parse error using the drawing scale conversion in 2008. In the version I can't talk about the formula works. I guess everyone will have to wait another 4 months for this to work exactly how you explained.

Sorry Christopher - I was thinking ahead. All you have to do until then is substitute "(12)*()" for "{Drawing Scale Conversion}". Of course, put a number in for . 🙂 That will work.

OK, I am now completely lost! How are you inserting an expression or equation for the 'Start Point Y Offset' value? It only accepts feature dimension and label location, or other components, and as for the 'y-offset' It only accepts real numbers. Anybody?

Are you using 2008? I put a file with an examle here (2-5-08):

Ok, so you can use expressions in the 'lengths'. Thanks, I was racking my brain trying to do as others had posted they had done and insert them in the 'x and y offsets'. Thank you for the clarification.

I would like to write an expression that would compare my structure station to the start and end station of the referenced alignment, and have this expression available to use in my structure label. But the ref align info is not available in structure expressions, and I can't fifgure out where to write an expression that would show up in my structure expressions so that I could bring in my ref align info. In 07 all expressions were available in all labels and expressions, but in 08 they seem to be filtered by object type. Any suggestions? Thanks again for you help.

Create in 2007 and bring forward to 2008, I think sinc indicates how he does it.

I tried it in 07, but my memory had failed me. If you put an expression in the alignments area it can be used for alignement label styles, and only there, it is like this for each section. But for some reason I kind of remember using a expression for profile data in an alignment label, but I can't figure out how or where to write my temp expression to represent start and another for end to then be able to use them in a comparison expression in the structure label style.

It was "fixed" in 08 to remove that functionality, you're not going nuts.

James

I think we met briefly at AU.

Any thoughts on how to accomplish my comparison between structure location and start or end of that structures reference alignmment?

Not without two labels or going back to 2007 to build the expression.
