If you mean how often it will be in the label sets next to the label style name.

For some insight into why/how span labels work (and don't work) see my post at www.civil3d.com

I can get the labels to display the correct distance when spanning outside segments, but sometimes we use crows feet which are anchored to the direction arrow for lines... but the direction arrow doesn't seem to span outside segments. I have turned the span toggle to "true" for direction arrow before anyone asks ; )

gothcha.
I'll post more at civil3d.com later today, but basically, this one is hit or miss.

try this:
1 reverse the label that won't span the crows feet
2 flip the label that won't span the crows feet
3 all else fails, make child styles for 'start crow foot only' and 'end crow foot only' then label separately

but I will run thru some of the scenarios that give me trouble and the solutions I've found in a blog post later today

Try giving your direction arrow a small Y offset from the segment.

I documented it here

and I gave your credit, MMcall. You Rock.

yeah, I don't quite understand why it works but it does.

My only guess it that at some level the coordinates of the lines are being rounded and it's causing the end of an intersecting line to calculate as being over/crossing the segment being spanned. Pushing the direction arrow to one side gets it past these little overshoot calculations.

i'm betting it is like the curve label span where if it isnt far enough away from the "wrong" side (ie the side with the split face vertices- see my post on www.civil3d.com from last night) it has an identity crisis. the little offset throws it into the right mindset.
