Slope stationing.

Can civil3d station a 3d polyline as an alignment with slope stations instead of horizontal stations?
Thank you very much!

I don't have an answer for you, but I would very much like to know how to do that as well.

Civil 3D can't station a 3D polyline. And with an Alignment, the stationing is always measured in 2D.

What exactly is the purpose for this type of stationing? Is it related to some sort of utility work?

Yes, it is related to some sort of utility work. Several local utility companies require the "slack chain" stationing along the right-of-way for construction purposes. It would have been really handy if it were an option within Civil 3D. Even if it would show the profile slope distance along the alignment, that would be a nice feature.

Maybe a future option?

It's not in Civil 3D by default, but the Sincpac-C3D adds an EntityTracker command, which gives that information for 3D Polylines, Feature Lines, and Survey Figures as you move the mouse over them (even if they're in XREFs). It doesn't do it for Alignments/Profiles, though... I might be able to work something in for that in a future release. It might be tricky getting it to work through XREFs for Alignments Profiles, and the vertical curves could add some complications, too... But other than that, it might not be too difficult. I'll look into it.

Just out of curiosity, how many people use this sort of "slack chain" stationing? I've never seen anyone use it in utility work in Colorado.

We do plan and profile sheets for proposed pipelines and the majority of our clients require slope distance chainage on the profile sheets. This feature would be necessary for us to use civil 3d.
