Sample Lines without alignment

In land desktop we were able to cut sample lines anywhere in the terrain tab by defining groups of sections and them sampling them. I am a new user of Civil 3D 2010 and have been unable to find this function. It appears you can only sample sections if you have an alignment defined. Our company does a lot of dredge projects where we have pre-dredge and post dredge surveys. We need to cut sections along grid lines to show the regulatory agencies the amount of dredge spoils removed. Could someone please point me in the right direction.

As you've noticed, sample lines are a subset of an alignment, meaning you can't have sample lines without an alignment. Create an alignment and then the sample lines. It's pretty easy to do.

If you absolutely must not have an alignment for the sample lines, you can create an alignment for each and every one of your sample lines and then create profiles for each and every one of them and then you can create profile views for each and every one of them. Much easier in my opinion to create one alignment running along your grid and then create sample lines off it.

Thanks Brian
I took your advice and created an alignment through the midpoints of the sample line set. It all worked all.

Actually the Land Desktop sections you refer to are essentially the same as Land Desktop Quick Sections. The quick profile tool in C3D is close to being equivalent. Once inserted into the drawing it must be exploded to preserve it. Otherwise Quick Profiles in C3D are erased when the file is closed and re-opened. If you want the sections to dynamically update then you will need to use alignments as suggested.
