Quantity of earth to be moved to level the ground

Hi
Is it possible in Civil 3D to have a view of the quantity of earth to move from one place to other in order to level the ground according to the cut and fill quantity generated. For example, like we want to know what quantity of earth shoud be moved from one location to other so that both the locations are levelled.
I shall appreciate any reply and procedure to do so.
Thanks
Amit Dhill

Hey Amit;

Are you sure you would want the ground "levelled"? Most hydrological
jurisdictions I've dealt with over the years want the rainwater moving to a
collection point for dispersal.

I think I got the drift of your question, I just wanted to see if you had
thought the whole thing through.

Hi Don
Thanks for the reply, but I mean to ask that for site planning when the cut and fill is executed to get a levelled land for plotting and development, is it possible in C3D to know roughly what volume of earth has to be removed from which place and dumped at which place to level the site altogether. I hope I am able to make myself clear.
What you have replied is also now what I would like to know how to do in C3D.

That's a good place to begin with, then. I don't have the expertise with C3D
to tell you the "how" to accomplish what you want to do - I just am aware
that you "can" do what you want to do.

We can now wait on those with that expertise to join in this discussion.

Are you asking how to generate a cut-fill map once you've got a Proposed
Surface? I'm a bit lost.

Hi James
Thanks for the reply. I am not sure what do you mean by cut-fill map. What I want to know is that, lets say after generating the actual surface and proposed surface we get the total cut & fill quantities in terms of value. Now is it possible to know how much to cut from where and how much to fill where on the site, I mean movement of earth from one place to another on site, to get the proposed surface.
I hope I made myself clear.

Hi
I think you have divide the area atleast 2 and calculate the cut/fill volume for each surface and adjust the surface boundary to balance it. its not an easy task and I donot know whether it will workout, just my guess

Sorry, I just want to make sure I am understanding you; are you just looking for a way to set a level plane across a site and the have C3D balance that site for you?

Hi Pesto
In one way I want what you wrote. After getting the total value of cut and fill required (only value is what you get), I want to know how much earth has to be removed from which spot and how much to be filled at which spot, so that we get the proposed site.
I hope you get me. What is the movement of earth from which spot at site so that the proposed level is achieved.

With LDT you could create a banding display to determine the limits of cut and fill and then do a parcel under the site to extract the quantities from that area, but I can't seem to find any tools in 3CD that do anything similar... Any ideas anyone?

Try creating a grid volume surface of your existing ground and proposed
ground. Then you can edit the surface style to show banding at certain
intervals. Such as -5 to 0m and 0 to 5m. This will show the cut area up to
5m in one color and the fill area up to 5m in another color. You can have as
many intervals as you want. You can also create a table that will give area
in cut, area in fill, etc.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

Hi D Randell
Thank you for your reply. I will try through the method described by you and see if it works. But I suppose in Grid volume surface also, the part of surface left outside grid is exempted from the calculation, making the quantities un precise. But I will still try this.
Thank you once again

Thanks D Randell, that is what I was looking for, it must have slipped my mind. Amitdhill, when you create the grid surface you can make the grid as dense as you like. As D Randell suggested, you can get the cut and fill areas from the banding. Then you can copy the proposed surface and add a boundary along the cut/fill boundary. Then re-run the earthwork and I think you have it.

Hi all,

At the risk of proposing something which is known to be unstable - I think
the grading tools are your best bet. You can use them interactively in the
first case to layout a basic level for grading, then tie it into existing
ground at defined cut and fill slopes if you wish (if not you can tie in
vertically ignoring slopes). You can then query that grading for its cut
and fill quantities and finally you can even have that grading auto-balance
itself to a new level where you explicitly set your desired cut/fill balance
(maybe you want to have an excess cut of 2000 to fill some other pit on the
site).

Finally after all that you can convert the grading into a surface, make a
volume surface between the grading surface and the ground, and then stylize
the resulting "delta" surface to show areas of cut and fill in differing
colors or depth contours.

Only problem as far as I can see is that Grading often crashes.

Good Luck,
Natan

You can also try to make a volume surface and then draw polylines around
your cut and fill areas and use bounding volumes for each polyline. You will
at least get the volume for each spot with this.
