I am using C3D 2012. I my drawing I have 3D solid objects that I want projected into my roadway x-sections. When I use the menu command to "project objects to section views" and select "solids" I get the message "no objects to project". Are their different types of solid objects in autocad? I'm not sure what I am missing.
Any help is appreciated.
I've projected spheres with no problem. They're a type of solid that used to be know as a primitive solid. It's possible that the solid is too complex.
However help says that solids can be projected.

I have tried the “solid” command to create a simple square shape. I have also use the “box” command to create a solid shape but did not have luck with either type.
All the other type of object types you noted I have used in the same drawing file and they all work.

I just projected a box with no problem once I set the correct elevation.
Have you tried restarting Civil 3D and or rebooting your computer?
Yes I have restarted the drawing/program/computer.
I just created a new drawing with a simple short straight road, added my sample lines, created my section views. Using the "box" command I added a solid object within the sample range for projecting objects and got the same result "no objects projected".
Is their a setting that I am missing?

When you select the 3d opbject and go to the properties dialog does the object show up as a 3D Solid or a Mesh or something else? I know the mesh won't project to views.
Another way to do this is draw a pline for the bottom of the 3d object, offset this pline slightly inside and up to the top elev. Make a surface with the 2 plines defined as breaklines and that will go into view w/o issue. For irregular objects, use the outer pline as a boundary as well as a breakline.
If you have a large number of these objects, add all to the surface in one shot. Draw a pline with all of the objects to project inside. Use this a a hide boundary on the surface and then select all of the outer plines (hopefully on a different layer than the inner plines) and use them as Show boundaries on the surface. We use this method to quickly add bld's to sections from aerial survey data.
Here is an example of the surface above from a hec study. We had two EG surfaces. One with the BLDs included with the EG for the hec analysis and another for plotting where the blds were a separte surface. All of the white blds went into section view very quickly and w/o issue.
Yes the properties on the solid objects are a 3D Solid.
I did try projecting in a sphere into the sections and that worked fine so still confused why some solids work and others do not.
I understand the method you described using a surface method and that might be my next option.

I quickly looked through the 3D system variables and did not notice anything that would change the type of solid created. Like Allen I am able to project boxes and sphere's but IME they don't always project completely.
I recently added some solids from Revit to a profile view too messy as I expected a box outline just showing where the cut line would be but got all visible data instead. I gave up.
I do however have a cleaner solution to suggest..
Create a standard AutoCad Section plane following the section / alignment location, section the object and create a section in the drawing. Copy, Explode and reposition & make a block then match Y insertion to scale. You will get better results but the downfall is they will not be linked.
I can't remember if you can specify a vertical exaggeration with the section plane commands so some steps could be missed.
