After further review and calling on all my declining brain power, it appears
that for the surface to appear in an xref, I had to attach the parent (or
blank drawing) file to a project. This doesn't make sense (to me), since
all I wanted was a "picture" of the base drawing. One of the surfaces was
OK before the attaching of a project.

I have some 20 profiles of storm & sanitary pipes in one rather large
drawing. In trying to use a secondary dwg file to handle profiles with an
xref I am not getting the existing ground profile to show in my xref. The
Final grade profile shows in areas where it is supposed to.
I seem to remember some problems with xref's in the past. I cannot find
anything of this nature, however. Does anyone have an answer?
Thanks,
Bill
