I recieved some dwg files to show existing utilities from a local municipality. I thought the files would come as shp files, but they are dwg files. The drawings/dwg files show the layout of pipes, but the pipes are polylines. The polylines have data attached to them. The properties show material, size, length, slope, etc. I am trying to label the pipes/polylines and I can't figure out how to get the information from the polylines. What am I doing wrong? Please help.
You should be able to label the pipes using the Map annotation tools. You set up a label template that references desired fields in the attached object data and places it on the graphics at locations you specify.
You could also export the DWG graphics to a shape file and then use a Map FDO connection to display the linework using themes and annotation from the attributes. That approach will give you the greatest control and flexibility.
Research "Map Annotation", "Export to Shape" and "Connect to Data" in the Map help topics.
I overlooked another option. You can also use Map's Task Pane to theme and annotate your dwg just like you could with FDO. Look under the topic "Theming Drawing Data" in the Map help system. This would probably be your best solution.
