Point cloud size limitations

What is a manageable size for a .LAS file (whether maximum points or maximum file size) to add to Civil 3d without having problems.  I understand the 1.5 million point display limitation.  But what about file import size limitation?  And implications?  Based on all of this I want to have the appropriate strategy for tiling my point cloud before bothering to bring it into Civil 3D.  I have the option to use versions 2011-2014, fyi.

Hi,

There doesn't seem to be any known specific file size limit, but rather a max number of points that can be displayed i.e. 1.5 million points. You may want to refer to the following documents to handle large surfaces:

http://forums.autodesk.com/autodesk/attachments/autodesk/66/128768/1/LargeSurfaceClass.pdf and

http://aucache.autodesk.com/au2011/sessions/6640/class_handouts/v1_CI6640-P_Triangulate_This_Surface...

Thanks,

You may try VRMesh Plugin for AutoCAD 2014. It organizes the large size of point clouds into small blocks, and process each block step by step.

You can just perform the decimation of point clouds, or wrap it into meshes. Finally, you can get a reasonable size of the result (point clouds, or meshes) for your projects. Hopefully, this is helpful for your project.
