Point Groups vs Layers

Does anyone have any thoughts on the best way to organize points? I am from an environment of creating different layers for each field code, then freezing them as required. With C3D, i tried using the point groups and letting everything drop onto "V-NODE" , but as I am developing proposed grades, and structures, I need to see them in different ways at different times, so I find myself creating numerous point groups and point styles and shuffling them around to see the points the way I want. It is becoming confusing!
Any suggestions to organize the point data?

Under toolspace -> settings -> right click drawing -> edit drawing
settings -> object layers
I changed the modifier on the point groups to a suffix -* , that way each
point group created is on a separate layer that can be turned on and off.
e.g. v-node-eop, v-node-grnd, etc.
