Civil 3D 2015 seems to have binned the Layers toolbars which were useful for seeing the current layer, freezing thawing etc etc - without having to go to the Home panel. Is there any alternative now - I've added some Layer icons to the QAT but this is getting very cluttered?
and how do I get the LayerFilterComboControl onto the QAT

IF you go to the home tab of the ribbon, layer tools panel and right click on the dropdown layer list you can select Add to Quick Access Toolbar. This will place the dropdown on top of the screen. There is new function to this as well. You can now assign layer colors from this drodown where the older dropdown for the older toolbars does not permit this.

Do the same with all of your favorite layer commands I see in your image and you can get a little screen real estate back from the old toolbars.

No problem Neil. Here's a sho of my QAT. Remove what you don't use add what you need all with a right click. It's nice to have these commonly used commands never leaving your site with workspace and ribbon changes.

I believe the layer toolbars are the same as 2014. Try LAYERS II from the Autocad Toolbar selection.

In my case, I right click on either the left or the right border and I have about 6 options to choose from. One of them is regular Autocad. Now if I remember correctly they did not want to show up until I have at least one Autocad toolbar on my screen after which all the toolbars are available. I wish I could remember how I got it started. I just remember it usually takes me some time to get it. If Jeff is available I am sure he can tell you real quick.

I believe the key to displaying the available toolbars is making sure you right click on a blank area right next to any docked toolbar.

How do you access them?
Right-click the area where the Transparent commands toolbar is located. If you have no toolbars displayed, edit the CUI, modify the workspace, scroll to the PArtial Customization files, choose Autocad, expand Toolbars, scroll down to LayersII, check the checkbox.

In 2014 on the View ribbon tab, User Interface all the way to the right, there is a Toolbars button that will list the available toolbars. They finally added that in 2012 or so (?) because it was a real killer trying to find the right open space to right-click in. Or worse yet having to edit the CUI just to get one to show.
