Modified in a previous version of the software warning

I'm still seeing this issue on a brand new 2014 projects that have no previous versions of Civil 3D files in play whatsoever.

I first saw this when upgrading an existing 2012 project to 2014 during testing and created This related post.

Are others seeing this warning?

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this message or is it possibly a bug?

"XG-Flag was modified in a previous version of the software. Changes in the current were overwritten when the data reference was synchronized."

Several other users here with (began in 2014 version) projects are also reporting this issue.

The message “…was modified in a previous version of the software. Changes in the current were overwritten when the data reference was synchronized” occurs when you open the drawing (containing data shortcuts) with different version then the one it was last edited (round-trip objects) created from data shortcuts. Typically objects created by data shortcuts in 2014, then edited in 2013 and again opened in 2014). Not sure what else it may be. This is described in help:

If you edit the objects in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013, save the drawing, and then reopen the drawing in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2014, AutoCAD Civil 3D 2014 will synchronize the references to the source drawings automatically and previous edits made in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 will be lost. When this occurs, a task dialog is displayed notifying you that the references in the drawing were modified using a previous version of the software, and that synchronizing the data references will overwrite the alignment or profile data in the drawing.

What kind of Civil object is XG-Flag? This is how I was able to replicate the warning you are seeing with this workflow:

  1. In Civil 3D 2014 create alignment by data shortcuts, save the drawing and close it
  2. Open Civil 3D 2013 and edit referenced alignment (“If a drawing is created with a reference to an alignment or profile shortcut in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2014 and then the drawing is opened in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013, the alignment and profile will appear to be regular objects (not reference objects) and they will be editable).
  3. Save drawing with Civil 3D 2013
  4. Open Civil 3D 2014 and the warning like this should show up.

Do you share Working Folder? Do you remember if anyone may have opened and edited these objects in older version before others opened them in 2014?

Hi Alamas,

What's strange about this issue is, No version other than 2014 Civil 3D SP1 has ever been used to open any of these files.

There is no round tripping whatsoever that should be occurring in this case.

Project was started in Cvil 3D 2014 SP1 and only 2014 version was used to open any of the files.

XG-Flag is a "Surface Profile"

FG-Flag is a "Layout Profile"

This issue is not just happening on my project, it's happening around the company in other offices too on their projects.

Nobody even has 2013 installed here except for me and I've never used it for project work.

Hi jay,

Any chance of workflow being something like this?

1. Drawing created in Civil 3D 2014 with SP1and saved/closed

2. Drawing then edited in Civil 3D 2014 and saved/closed

3. Drawing opned in Civil 3D 2014 with SP1 (this is when the warning message occurs)

Yes we do have "project specific" _Shortcuts folders on the network that all users on a given Project would be mapped to.

Nobody has opened these files in a previous version as I've had it happen "Test Projects" on my hard drive where nobody else had access to the files.

We all have SP1 installed so step 2 isn't possible here.

This just happened to me in 2015. I have a project where every drawing was created from templates that were based on the acad.dwt 2015 template and all created on my computer only as I'm the only one with 2015 installed. This morning I created a corridor drawing and brought in the alignments and profiles through the data shortcuts. I closed the drawing this morning, then reopened it just a few minutes ago and get the warning that the profiles were all modified in a previous version of the software. That's impossible as these drawings were all created in 2015.

I started a SR about this to see what Autodesk will say. I'll most likely have to add this to the giant list of bugs affecting 2015.

This occurs often here in 2014 SP1 but seems somewhat random.

Several projects it happens on are, pure new in 2014 version projects, that were begun with our 2014 dwt.

Our dwt was rebuilt from scratch in 2014 beginning with the OOTB Acad.dwt.

Very perplexing and I have no idea what causes this.

Could it be similar to being notified that an Xref needs reloading even though it hasn't been changed. Sometimes dates and time get a little screwy. Especially in the servers.

The problem is that the drawing containing the profiles hasn't been opened, let alone edited, since I created the data shortcuts yesterday. How can I get a warning about profiles being modified in a previous version when the source drawing hasn't even been opened and the profiles were created in 2015?

Is it possible that 2014 components got embedded in the 2015 templates that ship with the product?

That's possible, but I doubt it. 2014 was exhibiting this same behavior, so it would have to be that 2013 components got embedded in the 2014 templates, then they carried over again to 2015.

Isn't it interesting that the behavior coincides with 2014 and 2015 files being compatabile with 2013?

FWIW, It seems to be a benign error and still persists here in all drawings created in 2014 SP2 which were derived from the "2014"_AutoCAD Civil 3D (Imperial) NCS.dwt.

I've not heard of or seen any fix for the issue, several others in this forum have also reported the issue.

We just ignore the error and it's never caused any issues here other than the annoyance of throwing an error when it likely should not be. Smiley Frustrated

Oh alright well i didnt use that template at all since it came from a 2012 C3D, maybe is something in the SP2 download. I tried opening this in C3D 2015, error still shows up in C3D 2015.  Smiley Sad

I'm having the same issue except with a profile. I'm seeing it with a template created in a previous version of the software but all the Civil 3D objects were created in Civil 3D 2016, then SP1, and now 2016 SP2. There are more than 20 alignments in the file and each has at least four profiles. Only 1 or 2 profiles have had this issue. I'm creating the profile again from scratch to try and resolve the issue. That worked on previous similar errors.

I'm a little bit confused. What is the problem you don't see what in the profile?
Message 20 of 25

The problem was that the message says changes in the profile are being overwritten so I didn't know if the profile being shown was correct or not.
