When I have a Layer Filter invoked and want to create a new Layer (based on the filter), I get the attached message although a new Layer is created (Layer1), and then I have to unfilter the layers, rename Layer1 and then reapply the Filter.
This is a bit counterintuitive in my view so am I missing something that will bypass this warning message and additional steps??

My workaround for this has been to add Layer? or Layer* to all the filters. This way the layers will always come up when you do this.
Using the command line version -LAYER rather than the Layer Properties Manager seems to get over this annoyance

Thank you jalneal! In my opinion, this is one of the most frustrating regressions in layering functionality. When managing many layers, filters are a must and I'm always adding new layers. Coming from ACAD 2008, adding new layers from filters was not a problem. Surprisingly, your work around is the only discussion on the topic that I have found. I consider it a workaround, but it is not too terribly painful and I am grateful to have found it. Relatively new to forums, is there a higher authority to which to appeal for the return to "old" functionality in this regard? Thanks!

Good tip - seems to work and maybe preferable to the command line route

This has also bothered me. I just found a way to get around this. You can add Layer1 to each filter you create and then you won't get the message and can keep working within the filter.

Yes - I mainly add to the PRoposed linework so I've added Layer* to my PROPOSED filter and the problem is solved.

Hey Neil,
Out of curiosity, what do your Layer Settings look like? (click the wrench icon in layer manager)
Do you have the new layer notification on? If so try turning it off and see if you can add a new layer w/o error from layman.

John,
Doesn't have any effect for me in 2012. I still get the error.
