This worked for me on our XP 32bit machines. I would wait for 20+ seconds for the bhatch command to start up.

It was already set to on, and the problem was the size of my dwg. It was a very large dwg. and when I set the preview to off, the hatch process functioned without hanging up. Even though your solution worked in reverse, IT WORKED! and for that I thank you.
