Grading - Tell me how you do this

I've been checking out these boards for a few months. I see alot of people using civil 3d with alot of success. So my question is this, how do you guys use the grading features successfully? I'm trying to do some simple grading with my feature lines and I seem to crash every other time trying to get varying daylight lines. Is there some trick I'm missing? Thanks ahead of time.

The biggest "trick" is knowing the limitations of the software. Right
now, grading still has issues, and I try to tread lightly around them.
Clean sites are a must, small radii in your grading objects are bad.
I've seen many people get around grading "issues" by becoming quite
imaginative with feature lines - they're not JUST for grading, you can
easily use them as a surface definition. Remember, as my grandfather
used to say, there's more than one way to skin a cat....

Thanks Jason. Your suggestion of feature lines is what I've gathered so far. There's no other way around daylighting though (to my knowledge). I'll definitely try to keep it simple though. Thanks again!

If you are not on Civil 3D 2007 w/ SP2, that may be an issue as well.

With 2005 you couldn't even do the grading tutorials that shipped w/ the
product. 2006 was a little better but still had a lot of grading issues.

Yes, I have SP2 installed. I'm hoping that 2008 continues the upswing.

Similar problems.. I have a relatively simple feature line. The whole line has the same elvation. I ask it to grade at a 2:1 to a certain elevation. It does the whole lenght of the line except the last two points.. Any ideas?

I hope that 2008 comes out pretty soon...because I'm have had one
unrecoverable drawing after the next in my attempt to use feature lines to
grade.
