Just answered my own question
using the menu
Grading->Edit Featureline Elvations->Set Grade/slope between points command
Assign it to a button or shortcut key
also flatten grade in the elev editor - I misunderstood flatten grade made it 0, but it makes it what you want...
there is a button on the ribbon. when you grip a fl the ribbon defaults to it.

Thanks Joe
I always forget those buttons are there as you have to turn them on ever time you start civil3d by pressing the buttons further along just another button click.
That's why I typically edit Feature Lines from the Modify Tab of the ribbon, all of the commands, none of the pain of expanding the panels.

Not to mention if you grab the feature line first the ribbon goes there automatically. ...Hmmmm I guess I mentioned it.

I used to have a command in toolpac for this...
Using the ribbon clicking icons is THE REAL PRODUCTIVITY KILLER
Unfortunatelly the toolpac command no longer works after I updated the tool. But however according to mister dotsoft nothing has changed while that and a load of other commands aren't working anymore. But... I can buy an upgrade ROFLOL and have no other option than to do so in order to get my old function back for wich I paid already.
ribbonstyle:
- convert 3d poly to featureline
- click like a moron like 8 times
commandlinestyle
- type 2 to 3 characters
- select 3dpoly
- hit spacebar 4 times (wich should of course be only one time)
Ribbon best invention since sliced bread for the elderly that like it slow.
The number of annoyances is skyhigh. In case a developper would sit a day next to me I could tell him all day long about commands that could be way better.
No I change a 3d poly to featureline. I want it in the same layer. Command switches back to it's default layer. I hoped to see featureline in the toolspace-settings and under that commands in order to tell the stupid program to use the last entry again but hey it aint there.
It's beyond believe how crappy this software is
Aren't these the settings you are looking for? Other than the removal of the extra clicks.
You can create aliases of the commands on the ribbon for faster access, although it would be nice if Autodesk did provide the _CommandName options without a dialog box that most AutoCAD commands have that way the entire command could be put in a lisp command.
I use the command QUICKEDITFEATUREELEVS for grades and elevations. Its in the ribbon. Hover over the featureline segment, direct the triangle, click and type a grade. I use the elevation editor mainly for review.
