GPS Data Collector

Hello -

We are in need of a simple data collector that will import GPS coordinate point into vanilla autocad, (X,Y no Z)

The idea is to walk around in a big open field  and be able stake out tent locations.. so high tech is not required.

But when we get back into the office be able to import those points into autocad  and then create a simple site plan in autocad

Does anybody have a suggestion on this type of data collector

Thanks

Do you have a budget in mind? The price of GPS receivers goes up exponentially with desired precision - sub-meter and sub-centimeter vary VASTLY in price.

I would suggest looking at the Trimble GeoXT handheld models, perfect for GIS mapping. I'm not sure about pricing - you'll have to call your local Trimble reseller.

Seeing I'm not an emp[loyee of either the GPS manufactors or their partners I would say Topcon units for the bettter vaule. The Trimbles XT are great but the total costs can get up there with all the desktop software that you need to get the points into AutoCAD.  : )

I think you can do it with something like this; https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=145&pID=26876 Try calling Garmin and asking them what they reccomend. Allen

Yes he can in fact I do with my sport grade Garmin, however to get it from the GPS unit into the PC to export he needs Map Source which may cost extra and creating the DXF file takes a little work or exporting to txt format needs some cleanup afterwards.

Thanks for confirming that Murph. I thought that it fit the OP's use better than a GIS grade mapper. I don't have any experience with either type myself. We use Leica, survey grade, GPS units. Those can find a dime in a Kansas corn field.

If you can pull the money Trimble handhelds are great, 5k is a lot of cash though (last time I looked)

I've used both Topcon and Trimble handhelds and I definantly prefer the trimble unit (personal preference)

good luck!
