Fatal Error While Selecting an Imported Shape File

Just received a shapefile from our GIS department.  I imported the file in with no problem.  But then when I went to select the object I received the attached fatal error message.  I thought maybe restarting the computer would help, as it has with multiple issues I have had, but it didn't help. I didn't want to leave the unstable image in the file just in case someone else was working and accidentally selected the objects.  I found a way around the issue but it took a little longer than I wanted it to, and as they say time is money. However, I didn't figure out why the program kept crashing, and it still does if I select the objects.  I have never had this problem with any other shapefiles.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
