FBK file and resection

Why can't the FBK file from a leica be processed? We are always having errors??

What kind of errors? Can you post a screen grab or the FBK textfile?

Becuase Lieca latest Data Collection software is crap. It was designed to work with 12d not C3D.

To use all of the capabilities of the instrument you need to use LGO (LeicaGeo Office) to process the data. The *.rw5 and *.fbk file formats are from TDS and Softdesk in the mid 1980's the software does not understand the capabilities of modern instruments. To use the free station methods (Smart Station GPS, Resections, mixed GPS and TPS) you need to use the instrument manufactures software. Process and adjust in LGO and export in PXYZDA..csv format and import into C3D and apply description keys. CODELISTS  in instrument and in C3D must match exactly for point codes and line work.

Or you can process the data in the instrument and export a point file. (But you can only edit Control Points)

The Softdesk engine processes a simple Plate Angle Survey. It does not understand mixed TPS and GPS surveys, Resections, Reciprocal Leveling, Solar Leep Frog, Triangulation.

I was a Chief Surveyor for a Major Oil Company; responsible for certification of new software and instruments, the only instruments and software that consistantly passed the tests were Wild/Leica and Move3.

This is somewhat dissapointing, you would think Autodesk would update this information, we were told it would do the job when we purchased this. We dont want to use other software.

To utilize the full capabilities of the instrument you need to use the instrument manufactures software.

There is no way AutoDesk can keep up with all of the capabilities of all the different instruments.

There have no changes in the survey software engine in 20 years since Softdesk Survey was acquired by AutoDesk. It still has the same errors problems and limitations it had then. Auto Desk products are graphics programs not survey programs.

Both the TDS and the SoftDesk have limitations in the way they handle free station survey methods. Limitations on point numbering and conflictiong point numbers. The software will process conventional plate angle surveys in a small area under 10 square miles without too large of errors. (Geoid Corrections, Grid Progections)

I use LGO “Leica Geo Office, Move3, and Bear Creek for processing survey data. I’ve processed data from 30 crews containing thousands of resections and mixed GPS / TPS setups. On projects covering hundreds of square miles. With no problems. You have to know the capability and limitations of the software and instruments you are using.
