Desc Key Layer vs. Point Group Layer

When I set a layer for a description key (different from the layer set for
the point group) and insert a point that uses that description key, the
point lists the correct layer. But if a freeze that layer, the point still
shows on screen. The point group settings seem to override the desc. key
settings.

This also brings up another point...

It seems like description key functionality can be completely achieved with
point groups (with the exception of scaling and rotating the point symbol
based on description parameters which doesn't seem to be included in the
preview release).

What's the general feeling? Use point groups to separate point styles and
label styles based on description, or use description keys?

After doing a little experimenting, here's what I've found:

I think the problem you're running into is that for some unknown reason C3D
doesn't update points when freezing some layers. I could be wrong, but if
any desckey layer is frozen, it doesn't update the points on the screen.
But if you freeze a point group layer, it does a regen and all the points in
that group disappear. So basically, when you freeze your desckey layer, try
a regen and see if you're still having the same problem. Thawing the layer
does do a regen, so it seems like a bug.

I think the logic behind putting layer settings in both point groups and
desckeys is grouping similar points, but still keeping them seperate in
regards to the desckeys. For example, grouping all the concrete points
(EOC, TOC, TBC, BOW) so you can freeze all of them at once, but still being
able to freeze one at a time.

It seems that if there is a point style override for the desc key set to a
point style that uses an AutoCAD block symbol for the marker, the point
won't freeze with its layer.

Or, even if there is no override, but the group point style uses an AutoCAD
block symbol for the marker, the point won't freeze with its layer.

I forgot that desc keys also provide a method for code conversion - very
important.

So maybe we'll use desc keys for code conversion, block scale and rotation,
and layers (if it works), and point styles. And we'll use point groups as
much as possible for label styles.

Sorry, I'm using the newsgroup to think to myself.
