Creating surface without importing points

Hi all,

How do I create surface without importing survey points in to Civil 3D first? I can't find the option.. Did I miss anything here?

Fajar,

Here is my understanding from your post:
You want to create a surface, before importing Points or without Points:
The procedure is same:
1. Go to "Surfaces" menu -> "Create Surface.."
Or
2. In "Toolspace" -> "Prospector" tab -> right click on "Surfaces" -> "New"

This creates an empty (info) surface. Then you need to add Points or 3D Faces or Lines or AutoCAD Points .....

To create a surface, it is not necessary objects to be in drawing.

Please correct me if you I have not understood your post

Cheers,
Kashyap

I have tens of thousands of point data in a text file and importing the points in the software causes a severe performance issue.
I read somewhere that it is possible to create surface with points in external text file but couldn't find the option to do it.
Please help.

Here are the steps...

1. Make a new surface.
2. In Prospector open the surface and go to "Definition"
3. Right click on "Point Files" and select add.
4. Add the point file that you want to build the surface from.

Hi,

Please note that the file should be in PENZ format. If you have point files in a format other then PENZ space delimited (for example PNEZ comma delimited), you must use the Transfer Points utility, which is accessible by clicking Points > Utilities > Transfer.

I may possibly live in the wrong part of the country. I would like to see a
show of hands that use PENZ over PNEZ.

Hi Bill,

Everything I see behind the scenes of Civil 3D is effectively AutoCAD X-Y or
East-North orientated and no doubt is was far easier to deal with the
East-North order in a logical sense.

On the other hand why couldn't they have made all the file format options
available while adding the file to a DTM as happened in Land Desktop.
Hopefully the next version will do that.

When we first brought Softdesk to Australia, we couldn't get several
Givernment Departments (and hence their consultants) interested before
setting the whole thing up to be East-North oriented, so I appreciate your
concerns.

Hi...The question was about creating surfaces "WITHOUT" a point file...just with lines. It's something I'd like help with as well.

I've been doing this 30+ years and cannot ever recall receiving a PENZD formatted file from anyone but a non surveyor.  It's always PNEZD.  Luckily it's easy to spot and easy to change so no big issue.
