I am trying to create label styles that match our company standards. Unfortunately the program defaults are lame. I went through the help menu, but of course that was no help.
Has any one been able to do this? And how?
Your post is a little vague. How about start with a picture (.png) attached of what your trying to do. Include the version you using. This is helpful as 2013 is not backward compatible.
Have you had any training?
Do you have a book like Mastering C3D?

Of course we'll help if you post specifics. In general, after you've read help and a few articles on the web, the best way to learn is to do. Create some styles and play around with them. See what affect changing things has. Also search this board for Label Styles and read some of the post. They'll have some good advise. Like [this] one.
Let us know what point you're stuck at. Then maybe we can get you to the next step.

I am using C3D 2012. I always used plane old AutoCAD in the past (releases 14, 2000, 2006 and 2009). I've had no training with Civil 3D nor do I have any books for the program since Autodesk refuses to include them with the purchase of the program.
I need to make labels like this using the font styles and heights that our company uses in plans. See image. The defaults suck.
I need to have the leader when the text is pulled away from the object that it refers to. A lot of what I do is not associated with surfaces just simple objects, but I would like to be able to create for surface items as well as callouts and other things.
If you've only used simple AutoCAD, Civil 3D is a HUGE leap. Invest in a training book. It'll pay for itself in a couple months.

Also, just yesterday (maybe the day before) someone wasoffer older versions of the books for free. Most of the information would still apply.

I afraid from what you've said that at this point you need to do some more studying. I haven't seen that you have the jargon necessary for anything other than a from the bottom up, step by step, tutorial. If you can't buy a book, there's plenty on the web. Just Google Civil 3D Styles and you'll get plenty to choose from.
I'm not trying to be tough on you. We've all been where you are at one time but you need to get to a point where we can help without starting at the basics. Of maybe I'm wrong an you haven't exposed you're level of learning yet.

It's very rare when someone says, "I want a lable to look this way" and I can't get it to do that. What you want most likely can be done (for some reason I wasn't able to view your image as it just came up blank). Can you repost the image?
As others have said, get a book, get some training, become intimate with these forums, and you can be a pro at creating styles.
I looked at the image and it is a text with a box around it. You can add a box around any Civil 3D text label with either rounded corners or square. You can also adjust the font and the spacing of the text box that is applied all the way around the text. If you need more control over the spacing at the top and the bottom of the text, that is possible, but requires a bit of work.
Make sure you start with one of the templates like _AutoCAD Civil 3D (Imperial) NCS.dwt. Starting with acad.dwt is a very not good.
I would also suggest that you start learning Civil 3D and for the first two weeks don't worry about what the drawings look like. This will allow you to focus on the workflow and not get wrapped around the axel trying to get your drawings to match your CAD standards, over time you'll get there.

Peter:
I was with Brian when he said the image was blank (using Google Chrome). But opening with Firefox I see the text boxes. NOW, that's pretty lame.

The defaults "suck" if you use the "acad.dwt" to start with. Try using the NCS<@@@>.dwt to start with; it offers much more to edit
Joe:
This is my 10th version year to use Civil 3D, and I do not know what all those "@" 's are supposed to represent. Talk about confusion.
Bill
help me out! I did know the rest of the NCS name .dwt
