Contours from shp files...what is going on with the elevations?

What happened to being able to import polygons as closed polylines for shp files that maintained their elevation? I went from using 2011, to 2014 and now i have to query data in order to get contours from Pennsylvania' mapping website to come in with elevations? Seems like it just became a longer process, maybe ill just skip it and use the las file instead. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas for me? Can you confirm this change - or am i missing a step as it has been a while since i imported from anothe rsource in order to get surface data?!?!? Thanks!

Go to Surfaces in the ribbon and choose Create Surface From GIS Data.

No change there, sir.

Still you can import polygons as closed polylines at their own Z, as long as you have a "true" shape 3D i.e. carrying physical elevations.

If you have a 2D shape with elevations within the Object Data, you put the contours on the right height only by a "draw query".
