Civil 3D vs. Land Desktop

I am going to have to learn Land Desktop or Civil 3D for my position. I am wondering what would be the way to go. I don't want to spend the time learning the one that will fall off the shelf soon.

Autodesk has made several white papers available on C3D - you can click on
the Civil 3D page at the bottom, then click on the "Features &
Specifications" link on the left-side navigation bar, then select "White
Papers" and look for the comparisons to Land Desktop. Other white papers on
that site may also be useful to you to understand the benefits of Civil 3D.

We also have ongoing webcasts and several archived webcasts, which you can
view by going to the Civil3D product page & click on the "View Free
Webcasts" on the right side nav bar.

Hey Himanshu;

Was that a Freudian slip, you're mentioning the "Free Webcasts"?

Will AD begin to charge admission soon?

And then you got your Popcorn, soda, candy... 🙂

Don,

No charge for the webcasts as far as I know. However, I think I'm gonna
have to start charging for every post of yours that includes bait 🙂

"View Free Webcasts" is exactly what the button on the web page says, that's
all.

Hey Himanshu;

Well, since no one rose to the "bait" (not even a nibble), you can imagine
the conclusion I came to, without any data to refute my conclusion.

Please provide that data (if able) so that I can be more fully instructed.

TIA

While yours is an intelligent attitude. You've gotten in at the wrong time
for an either/or decision.

LDT has already been discontinued for all but stand alone single seat
installations. There will be no further addition to the functionality. From
now on until it is finally killed there will only be "compatibility"
releases.

So it looks like Civil 3D is the way to go. BUT! All releases of Civil 3D
include a companion installation of LDT. This is because Civil 3D is still
in it's infancy and cannot do everything you need to be able to do to do a
complete job. This dual release strategy will go on until a'desk believes
Civil 3D can survive as a single product.

So while you will need to start learning Civil 3D you will also need to work
in LDT for the time being. That's not all a waste of time. While the
software is quite different. The basics of how alignments, surfaces,
profiles, etc. are still the same. Also learn point groups in LDT. They are
essential in C3D.

Allen,

From your post I understand there should exist something like LDT 2006, is this correct?

Here in Europe, for us as a customer under subscription contract, we've received last year our update of LDT to the 2005 release, and added in the box we've received Civil 3D "as a tryout". The dealer network informed us of the fact that Civil 3D did not contain any functionallity to design sewer systems at the time. ergo: we dropped the Civil 3D box, because it contained a program we could not use to do the job we're supposed to do.

This week, we've received Civil 3D 2006 under our subscription program, and there is no LDT accompanying it... There is a small note in the box telling us we've been crossgraded and migrated....

So I'm quite surprised you mention a double release strategy... Did you actually receive a LDT 2006 box?

Ludo:
I would expect the European procedure to be somewhat the same as here in the
USA. So far I have received Survey & Raster Design. Not good for anything,
yet. You should receive an LDD version at some point.

Not yet. But it is coming. You should receive Civil 3D plus the Civil 3D
Land Desktop Companion. The Companion is a full seat of LDT 2006. If you
also had Civil Design you should receive that companion license also.

Good news. Civil 3D 2006 contains pipe networks. The demo looked good.

Hi there,

I'm affraid we're not al that lucky out here in Europe: A'desk has decided Civil 3D 2006 is all we're going to get. The LDT 2006 you've received is not distributed (not even made available) out here.

As you may imagine, our customers have demands that sometimes can be quite different then you are used to in the states... So we have to build our own add-ons on top of the software. We did so on top of the LDT series, and now the European A'desk strategy forces us to start re-building our own add-ons on top of Civil 3D.

Only one little problem: our dealer and developer network confirms us that the present Civil 3D perhaps is still a bit "premature"... and in any case far from being "ready for use in a production environment". They inform us they are not willing to start any serious development ontop of the present Civil 3D release, since they consider it far from impossible that the next release might contain "differences" which would cause the developments having to be re-done.

Conclusion: A'desk gently forces the clients in to a pre-financing scheme thay call subscription, and in return they provide us with software that is not ready to use in an efficient way..... We will have to keep on working on our "old" LDT releases, and not even benefit from the "compatibility advantages" you people find in the LDT 2006....
