Civil 3D Vault issues

I figured I may as well post this here as I'm using Vault through C3D...

We are running a test project before we fully deploy C3D throughout the company. Last month, I started setting up base files and getting them all set up in Vault. Everything seemed to be hunky-dory. Here's what I'm running into today...

We have our project files on a server, as I'm sure do most of you. Last month, I was able to check out drawings, modify them, check them in and everything worked as it should. It created a local working copy, then saved the changes back to the server when I checked the drawing in. Today, that seems to not be the case. I check out a drawing, modify it, check it back in... but only the local copy gets updated.

I'm tearing my hair out over this and have no idea what the deal is.

If it helps, we have a file server where we, obviously, keep all of our project files and we also have a vault server which solely runs the Vault server software.

I'd appreciate any help.

Hi Paul:

You will only have one working copy of the drawing. You won't have a
working copy locally AND a working copy on a file server. You probably want
to set your working folder to a network location and only have your working
copies there. Nothing local.

You said, "It created a local working copy, then saved the changes back to
the server when I checked the drawing in."

It will save the changes to the Vault server when you check it in, but it
won't update a working copy in more than one location.

You said, "I check out a drawing, modify it, check it back in... but only
the local copy gets updated."

The working copy should get updated and the drawing within the Vault Server
should also get updated.

So, maybe your working folder should be something similar to "p:\projects".
No local working folder.

Sincerely,
Drew Burgasser

Are you getting any error messages when you check the file back in? After
you check the file out, locate the file in Vault Explorer. Was a new
version created? After you check the file back in, refresh Vault Explorer.
Is the new version still there?

Huh... I was given the impression that it would open the file FROM the server, create a local copy that gets the edits, then saves that copy BACK to the server.

If that's not the case, the I suppose I will have to set the working path to the actual server folder. Which means I will have to set a separate working folder for EACH project I create, correct?

Define "server" please. Vault server or File server.

I apologize...

It was explained to me that, using Vault in Civil 3D, I would check out a drawing from the file server, Vault would create a copy in the working folder (default on a local drive), I make changes, check the drawing in, and Vault would copy the changed drawing file back to the file server, while tracking the changes via the metadata on the Vault server.

I take it that is NOT the case, then?

This is NOT the case.

1. Drawing already exists on file server in p:\projects\3440\.
2. Create a project in the Vault called 3440, or if your file directory
structure is more complicated than this, you may have to create a Vault per
project.
3. Set working folder to p:\projects.
4. Open drawing.
5. Check it into Vault. Drawing now LIVES in Vault server and there is a
working copy in p:\projects\3440.
6. Check drawing out to work on it.
7. Check it back in when done. Again, drawing LIVES in Vault server and
there is a working copy in p:\projects\3440.
8. etc.

I think that the confusion arises from your idea that Vault tracks the
changes to the drawing but the drawing actually lives outside of Vault on
the file server. This is not the case. The drawing lives in the Vault
server and only a working copy will exist for when you check the drawing out
to work on it.

Huh. I'll be damned. That's what I'd originally THOUGHT it was like, but told differently. It certainly makes more sense.

Since we do have a more complicated directory structure (Client>Project Number>Phase&Task>etc.), I'll likely have to create a project entry in Vault for, at the very least, each project/phase combination (which I'd planned on anyway).

Well, thanks for the clarification. I should be able to get that all sussed out from here.
