Civil 2008 and X64????

Are there plans to make civil 2008 compatible with x64 machines?

Our brand new copies cannot be installed at the moment, since our machines are all x64 bit.

According to Autodesk Support, they do not plan to make a 64 bit compatible
version of Civil 3D 2008.

That's not good for me. I don't know how to explain this to our boss.

After we invested $30,000 in upgrading our machines over the past two years, just got finished paying $20,000 for training in civil 3d and now we can't even use it.

Wow. No offense, but did your IT dept. even look at the system
requirements for Civil 3D before blowing 30 grand on hardware and O/S?

You can't really use it on a 64bit os but you can use it on a 64bit machine
running a 32 bit os. Just don't go jumping on the Vista 64 train and you'll
be fine

There is hope for us yet, thanks to this thread in the ACAD Arch NG.

http://discussion.autodesk.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5552957

In short, it outlines a method of forcing an install of C3D via hacking,
or tweaking, the MSI and INI file(s). DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

DISCLAIMER: IF you use this workaround, you're on your own as far as any
level of support. Autodesk explicitly mentions that they do NOT support
64-bit OSes for Civil 3D 2008 (nor intend to from what I'm hearing).

Folks, I wouldn't expect a service pack to address the need for this OS
support when they're currently concentrating on features and stability.
Once that's down, I would hope there would be some testing getting done
behind closed doors.

Good luck with your installs!

As an addendum...figured I would add it here instead of the thread
mentioned below.

The thread mentioned and ACA.msi file, whereas for C3D it's the C3D.msi
file.

I have personally installed C3D 2008 along with LDT and even Raster
Design on a 64-bit OS. All is working VERY well so far, minus the Land
Companion-Enabled Map. It worked for a while (a day) on a rather busy
drawing with FDO connections and numerous AECC points, then wouldn't let
me save once I got it opened. I worked on it in LDT and C3D afterwards
with no problem at all, so I believe it has a lot to do with the LC-EM
install or coding.

Finally, I didn't get the added entries where it was mentioned that
would be found in the options paths. I guess that was just for that
vertical....

Hmm, well if that is true, then according Microsoft, Vista 32 is the last OS where we will see Civil 3D.

To me it seems a bit strange that there is an AutoCAD 2008 x64, but where you would benefit from the extra bits and memory, you are forced back to x86.

so for the people using the 64 bit, is C3d able to take advantage of the extra ram?
Message 14 of 19

No, they would not be able to use the extra RAM as C3D would run in 32bit mode.

The only advantage would be that the machine can have more RAM and thus more RAM would be available for the individual applications.

Thus you would possibly notice less swapping, but it is all down to the system to determine what to keep in memory and what to swap out.

I've had no problems with C3D running on Vista 64 except I can't access our Vault.

I only have the option to set the Working Folder or Refresh. The tool tip tells me "This feature requires installation of Autodesk Vault components."

Though I can access the Vault through Vault Explorer and ADMS Console.

Any ideas?

I ran into the same problem and could not find a way around it. I could not access Vault 08 with a 64 bit system. Although, vault 07 was never a problem on 64 bit. not sure why this ever happened, but I had to have vault to support my users, so I gave the 64 bit to an admin at my company and bought a new 32 bit.

I think that's where I'm at as well. Just give the software to some of the office staff and go back to 32 bit

How were you able to install LDT on Vista 64-bit? I just bought a new computer with Vista and am trying to load LDT 2008. Is there a way around this uby editing the .msi and .ini files?

This post on Civil3D.com has a link to ways to accomplish what you are after: http://www.civil3d.com/2007/04/without-a-net/ It worked for C3D 2008, haven't tried it for LDT2008.
