Changing over to C3D from LD 2004

Hello, would those who have made the transition from Land Desktop and Civil Design 2004 to Civil 3D, how well do the LD 2004 projects translate to Civil 3D? Is there anything lost or otherwise messed up in the transition? How long would you say a company of about 50 would need to completely transition to the new software? Thanks.

We have made the switch. (Last August). I've never looked back. !!! The only thing is.... you lose the functionality of alignments, profiles etc.. that were created in '04. I always start with a new civil 3d template and query in existing line work from LDT '04. (Just saves from file corruption.) The new dynamic modelling capability of civil 3d makes life a whole lot easier when designing projects and changing them with ease. I would suggest some basic training as the new program gives the same resluts but takes a very different approach to getting those results. (For the most part.) Have fun & keep an open mind !!!
dv out.

PS - you should keep your LDT '04 on you machines in case you need it.
Ahh yes, transition times. That will depend on the user. It took me about a month of playing around with tutorials and datasets. I still learn something daily, though. Some employees will struggle only because they are used to the old versions. It's best to basically wipe your brain clean before you start.

If you have long time LDT users, be warned: Some will HATE Civil3D and
resent you for trying to implement it.

Training, training and plenty of information to your users.........as much
as they'll swallow without turning on you.

Hi,

One of the general rules of software change is to finish existing projects
in the software they were started in.

Start new projects in Civil 3D. Make sure the first project you do is one
with few complex design issues and is a relatively small project, so that
the learning phase does not get overloaded with project design issues.

Get a small team of to change first and sort out the issues your company
will have before deploying across the whole workforce.

Once you have an "in house" expertise, it becomes far easier to make your
company productive and encourage the slow starters.
