Can a profile callout be stretched?

I was working with our reseller, LACAD, who is really good at doing plan and profile label styles, and the subject of
"stretchable" profile callouts came up.
If I have two callouts in profile, that overlap, I want to be able to move one over.
These callouts look like vertical lines with text above and below the line.
The callouts that do not need to be moved can be single vert lines with text.
The ones that need to be adjustable would have a small vert line, then a diagonal one, then another vertical one, with
text above and below the last segment. Most everyone has seen these kinds of profile callouts.

What I learned was that you could not make the "3 segment callouts" stretchable.
You can define fixed lengths for the leader segments, but they cannot change when placed.

Does this sound right? Not to doubt my favorite reseller who bought me dinner last night, but I have to ask.
It seems so fundamental to have the ability to move callouts around to avoid overlap and improve readability.

The workaround is ugly, explode the callout and do the old way...
thanks

Nope, Danny (or Melanie,) is pretty much right on. What I've done is to just
turn off my leader option, so at least the text works, then draw in the
connection to the point.

The other option is to make about 6 different X offset versions and have
them all available. It's not pretty, but we've done that for a client as
well.

Thanks James.
It was Danny. He is so nice to work with, I'm lucky he is based out here.
Our kids actually go to the same school...

For something like this to work the "Tick" component would have to stay put during a drag and the leader would need to attach to the end of the Tick. In the help system it reads as though the tick should stay where it is, but it doesn't.

Another option would be a new leader style, one with an initial vertical member.

I'm looking for an answer to this question still with Civil 2012. Has anything been implemented in the program since this post so many years ago?  The option exists to add vertices to a leader so it seems like it would be easy for Autodesk to do this.

Thanks for any help!
