COORDINATE SYSTEM-POINTS

Hello,

I am using Civil 3D 2014.

I have a file that contains civil 3d points and a set state plane coordinate system.  It is my understanding, that if I toggle the coordinate system to a different one, that the points should not move until I perform some type of translation or scaling.  Is my understanding correct?

C,

I'm struggling for understanding on that one, myself. It looks like nothing happens until you hit Apply or OK on the Transformation Tab of Drawing Settings. And then all it does is add Grid Northing and Grid Easting to your point list. From there you'll need to export your Grid Coordinates and import them into another drawing, especially if you have linework tied to the Un-Transformed Points.

Right, the points only move in the drawing when a survey database is updated or when importing from one state plane to another.

So if your PNEZD file is from one zone, and the drawing is in another, when they hit the drawing they will have different coords than the PNEZD file.

If the points are already in the drawing, changing the SPCS won't do much except maybe change the grid northing/eastings columns if transformation settings are turned on. But those settings are only if you brought in the points from a local coordinate system.

Regards,

Mike

Autocad Map/Civil is able to convert on-the-fly from CRS "A" to CRS "B" in the following ways.

  1. entire drawing, thru an _ADEDRAWINGS => _ADEQUERY => Draw Query sequence

  2. single shapefile (e.g.your points' layer) thru _MAPIMPORT command like this:

It's difficult going from one system to another in Civil 3D. It works a little better if you're using a Survey Database. I find it easier to do the transformation externally on PNEZD files using CORPSCON. That's the source for any conversion you can do in Civil or Map anyway. It's Free and it's Fast.
