C3D crashes all the time

Hi,
I am experiencing constant trouble in designing a simple ditch in 3d. I've managed to lay out the alignment, prepare the profile and assemblies/subassemblies and create the corridor. I then plan to draw multiple cross section views and then prepare a csv cross section report. However the program now constantly goes to sleep on me each time I try to make it draw the cross sections. The processor goes up to maximum usage and I'm left waiting for multiple minutes before finally killing the program through the task manager (I've waited for up to 45 min before program kill). Because the program is constantly "working" there are no options to send an error report.
Has anybody experienced this and has a fix? Are there limitations of working area. My site area is approximately 4 sqkm.

Regards,
Snorri Gislason

I'm sorry that I cannot help you but there are a few things that should be
given with your post:

1. Version of Civil 3D (2006?)
2. Service Pack 2 installed?
3 Hot Fix 2 installed?
4. OS ?

And Snom - four square kilometers? Have you tried a "much smaller" portion
of the site, just to see if it's the size of the data?

I'm thinking that unless this is the "limits" of your particular drainage
basin you maybe should consider limiting the size of basins to their
smallest boundaries. That way they "might" finish their calculation in a
"reasonable" amount of time.

And a couple of things to add to Bill's list might be the amount of RAM you
have to work with, as well as the processor you're using.

HTH

Hi Snorri,

The area of site you work with is irrelevant to the amount of necessary
processing.
How many triangles there are in the DTM is the critical item, because that
determines how much data has to be processed.

Have you considered that by now this drawing may be corrupted?

Try the usual drawing cleanup tools like Purge, Audit, Map Drawing cleanup
to delete duplicate objects etc.

Consider recreating your design again in a new drawing - perhaps initially
with a smaller data set to ensure you have the process right.

Hello everyone and thank for your response,
I have made radical changes to the design file. Cut down the TIN model severely (approximately 80% cut!), cleaned out the file using your kindly suggested methods (purge, audit etc.) but without any result. Even recreation of design in a new file does not help. I am now considering reinstalling the program for a further try.

As pointed out by Bill earlier I did not mention anything about maschine or OS I'm running the program on so here are my main specs:

Program: Civil 3D 2006, Service Pack 2 + Hotfix 2.
OS: Windows XP pro SP2 including most recent updates.
PC: Dell Precision 370
Intel P4, 3.2 GHz
1.00 GB of RAM
ATI FireGL V3100, 128 MB Configured for AutoCAD

Did you try Don's suggestion of processing only a small portion of your
project?

Some of my work requires corridors at 2' intervals. I wouldn't dream of
running these until I ran them at 50' (or more) to be sure I had everything
correct, such as surface selections, etc. If you're trying to create the
section views, try ONE ONLY and see what happens. If it works, try 5
sections. If that works, start working your way through the project to see
where it is getting stuck.

Snorri,

Is it possible that you could send your drawing in for analysis? You
can email me: Himanshu.Gohel@... for file transfer arrangements. Thank you.
