C3D 2013: Survey Databases-What Point Coordinate System used in the .fkb file?

Hi all,

1) I just imported the Survey-1.fbk and Survey-X.fbk files of AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013 into the Survey Database of my Survey 1 project to get 2 drawings (see the 2 attached files) for these 2 sets of .fbk data:

Survey-1.fbk:

I have following questions to ask:

Q#1: What Point Coordinate System used in these 2 .fbk files? In the Lat.-Longs. system or the Easting-Northing system?

Q#2: Where is the origin (0,0) point for these 2 sets of the  points in the .fbk file?

Q#3: What are the grid coordinates and the ground coordinates for these 2 sets of points in these 2 fbk files?

2) If I want to create a new line (or a new building) from some "existing" points of the non-control points, how can I set up a new Figure-LineCodes in the Network of the each Survey Database?

Please kindly help, answer my questions, advise and respond.

Thanks in advance,

Scott Chang

Scott,

From Sinc's White Paper on Coordinate Conversions:

"FBK files typically contain unit settings, but not coordinate zone settings."

"It is important to note that settings in the Transformation Tab are NOT applied to survey data being imported into the Survey Database via a FBK file."

So whatever Coordinate System you have set in Drawing Settings is what those points represent.

Your fbk files are in an assumed coordinate system. You can tell by the 'NE' lines which establish the control points (STA1 and STA6) for the rest of the observations. These statements set those points at the coordinates shown. STA1 is set at 5000, 5000 which is a very typical location to start at if the crew is working in assumed coordinates. The coordinates are in northing - easting, thus the NE at the beginning of the line. If you have "real" coordinates for those points, you can modify them in the Control Points section of your network, and the whole network will move to the new reference location.
If you want to create a new figure, right-click on Figures in the database and select Add New. Follow the prompts on the command line.

Hi Kirk and Dave, Thanks for your nice responses.

One more question to ask you:  Where can I find the specifications of the FBK file for importing into AutoCAD Civil 3D 2013? Please kindly reply.

Thanks in advance,

Scott Chang

These two documents are probably installed on your computer in versions that match your Civil 3D. Search the help for Survey Command Language and also for Field to Finish.
